race harnesses

To have a racing harness do you need a race seat?
My car is a mini, which i would like to do sprints in, however i dont particully want to rip out half of the interior - still have a back seat that is useble!
I know harnesses arent mandatory for sprints but i hear they help to stop you getting thrown around so much!
