Beijing thread

Only a few more days before A1GP goes racing again so time to start the build-up and race thread I guess.

Interestingly I see that the USA have enlisted Ryan Hunter-Reay as their 'rookie' for this weekend - I was wondering what he was up to these days since losing his ChampCar ride.

Interesting, where did you hear that? He seemed to be a good peddler in Champcars. Any other news about driver lineups from your source then?

Sadly for Team Lebanon, Graham Rahal has decide to do no more A1GP and instead to concentrate on his Champ Car activities. Story here.

Fairuz Fauzy is coming back to Team Malaysia because they have changed the rules for those eligible for the rookie session on Friday morning. I hope this doesn't disrupt Alex Yoong's progress.

How could it disrupt?

They've not been running anyone in the rookie sessions thus far.

Fair comment and it could be helpful if they learn something in the Rookie session. It would be disruptive, though, if Fauzy were to stick it in the wall!

I'd imagine it will be Karl Reindler, as he has driven the car more and is not now going to race for ADR in the Macau F3 race the following weekend.

Just talked with someone who checked out the track today, apparently it looks good but the layout is TIGHT. It is also cold there now, so with a dusty track, low temperatures and walls close by I wonder how many drivers will stick it in the wall on Friday morning.

By 'tight' does that mean really narrow? Sentul looked pretty narrow on TV yet the racing didn't suffer too much.

I can't seem to find practice or qualifying times anywhere on the web site. Anyone know the times for Friday and Saturday?

I would have thought Johnny Reid would qualify as a rookie under the new rules (assuming Matt Halliday is back in the cockpit for race duties), however great that Cunnigham gets his opportunity as well.

I went past the circuit this morning and all the walls were in place and they were finishing the catch fencing. By the afternoon roads were closed off and the work seemed to be finished. Tomorrow morning the road cars and bicycles will give way to A1GP cars...The track does seem narrow but no more so than Surfers Paradise Champcar circuit for example.

A1GP has been covered in the print media here and Beijing TV have been interviewing the China drivers and seat holder for the last hour that I've had the TV on. Plenty of people should therefore know about it so hopefully will be a sellout for a great weekend of racing.

Day's running has been abandoned! Someone designed the hairpin too tight and the cars can't make it round the corner... oh dear.

It was an absolute farce. They tried to run the practice session twice but on each occasion on the first lap more than one car failed to make the hairpin and blocked the track. In the paddock all of the teams were shaking their heads and saying 'what a joke".

Hopefully Chinese motorsport authorities will finally put aside their false pride and be embarrased enough to realise that they should use expert consultants and cannot do everything on their own. The vast majority of people in both F1 and A1 hate China. I hate to think what the Olympics will be like if they keep stuffing up like this...

Sadly the A1GP ticketing department don't get high marks either. After buying a three day ticket almost a month ago it only got delivered last night. Not only that, it was only valid for Sunday! I was not amused to turn up at the circuit today and not be able to get in, have no idea where to go or how to find the right gates.

Put two monkeys together and you get a circus I suppose!

On a brighter note I very easily walked into the paddock and got lots of great shots (after being fed up at not being able to get to the grandstand where I was supposed to be!). Will share some images later.

Thanks kiwi for the first hand info, sounds like this could be a worse foul up than the loose manhole covers at Shanghai DTM?
