Lydden Circuit track record

As I get and keep only times of ERC rounds: Does anyone of you know the fastest time ever for one Rallycross lap and one qualifying heat over 3 1/2 laps at Lydden? My files still show Martin Schanche (Ford RS200 E2) in 1990 with 2:28.8 Minutes for 3 1/2 laps as the track record holder for an ERC round. By the way, Lydden saw a total of 23 ERC rounds between 1973 and 1996.

Haha, can you really see anyone going quicker Eddie!!

I reckon Renny may have got close a few times, but i doubt very much that anyone has got near Martin's times.

Don't think anyone will beat that time.
They are about 7 seconds a lap slower these days

The best recent one I can find in my records is Pat Doran doing a 2.33.45 on 29/8/05.

What sort of average speed is that UDB? I know the Lydden tarmac circuit is exactly one mile long, so the rallycross track must be only a tad shorter - anyone happen to know the actual length?

AFAIK the tarmac track is exactly 1 Mile long which is 1,609 Metres. The 1 lap record for that track is mentioned as 38.3 Seconds, driven in 1989 by Rob Cox (aka Rob Cox-Allison) with a Lola LC88. AFAIK the Lola LC88 was a F1 car and I wonder why a F1 car has been used at Lydden. For my old yearbooks I was always told by TEAC that the track for RX is 1,400 Metres long, although I think this is rather estimated than the correct figure. Before Martin drove 2:28.8 in 1990 the track record was held by Mark Rennison (Ford RS200 E2), who drove 2:31.8 during the 1987 ERC round. In the 1991 ECR Martin drove 2:31:1 and in the 1992 ECR Will Gollop (Metro 6R4 BiTurbo) drove 2:31:7. These are the fastest times I’m aware of.

In what car? This is not a bad time at all. Only a very few did times like that in the good ol’ Group B days.

Eddie in response to your question about F1 cars. I think Tony Trimmer and Rob Cox used to run in Formula Libre at Lydden and Cox ran many meetings in his Larrousse car, I went to see him at Donington, in Libre basically he could run against anything single seat, I think also there was a guy called Eddie McLurg who ran under 40 secs aswell.

Chunder you are correct Libre at Lydden in the late 80's I think there may have been other less well "peddled" F1 cars involved as well. They now have a 2L limit on single seaters racing, however the british sprint championship visits there with F1 engined single seaters.

This has drifted off topic, but Tony Trimmer ran in a F5000 car at Lydden in 1995 and was under 40s. Also Eddie McLurg is back racing at Lydden in SEMSEC Single seaters in a F2 March and is regularly getting down to 40s. But the quickest guy at the moment is Mark Burton in a Jade Sportscar who has done some 39s and is threatening to get under 38s. If you go to sprints however, the MSA Championship regularly has guys running well under 38s but do not count for lap record as in a sprint.

Back to thread - Pat's time I mentioned was in his Fiesta and at the same meeting Dermot recorded a 2.33.74 in the Focus.

winnie has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
According to BRDA website, Andrew Jordon did 2.35 at Lydden easter meeting. Pretty impressive concidering restricted engine and moulded tyres. Just shows the advances in suspension and diffs.

What was Dorans best time in his RS200 after rebuild. It had a reputed 800bhp and 'proper' suspension.

Schanche's I Can't remember seeing anything so quick on those long circuits... Even my favourite back then Matti couldn't keep up with the straightline pace of that high reving RS200... Even a proper 500 bhp road going RS200 is miles of that one!
