Oops, these cars ain't waterproof
I really thought someone would have already posted this story. For anyone who hasn't seen it, a transporter ship was in collision in fog in the English Channel and has sunk...
Along with its cargo of 2,862 brand new luxury cars! Yikes!!!! |

Sounds like the salvage operation will be mainly to clear the shipping lanes, but the cargo will be scrapped. I'd still want to be careful of any real bargin deals on a near new BMW.....

Well, it's in the channel, so they'll be pretty badly rusted too...
Oh well, I'm sure it's all insured... |

According to BBC News, those 2862 BMW's, Volvo's and Saab's were worth only 30 million GBP. That's about GBP 10500 on average. I would think that even the cheapest Volvo costs at leasts 1 1/2 times as much. |

It gets better - there's been another freighter run into the wreck of the first one overnight.
This despite a French frigate being posted on permanent guard at the wreck site to shoo them away... |

Never trust the French to do anything!
I'm only joking, btw, before anyone accuses me of being racist. |

We were thinking earlier - two guys in the tug looking on...
Mmmm - that 5 series just under the surface doesn't look too bad - might be able to salvage it, dry it out.... AAAAARRRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! (that's supposed to be a foghorn) *CRASH BANG THUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* "DOH!" |

Apparently, the Channel's not very deep there...
I heard on the radio last night that even though it's the world's busiest stretch of water, there is no overall control of who's going where - it all relies on the 'professionalism' of captains and functional ship radar... |

Lee, I agree with you that it is just national rivalry. Thing is, round my way, if you say anything about a person's skin colour or nationality, you're immediately branded a racist.

Still I wonder ...
What are brand new BMW's doing on a Norwegian ship in the Channel? |

Just think, all those cars will never be able to enjoy tailgating at 90mph up th M1, or cutting straight across the traffic on joining the motorway to reach the "Fast Lane" or hearing their disgruntled owner utter the well-worn phrase "Why aren't you out catching real criminals Ossifer?" (the reply being, of course "I am, Sir..." How we love stereotypes!! |

I think the BMW stereotype is 99% accurate though
put someone in a BMW and they think they have to be the fastest on the motorway, that is except those Z3's which are too slow for their looks and i even burned one off in my XR2i |

Which is almost as funny as the XR2 drivers (and RS Turbo drivers for that matter) who think they can have a go at a Subaru Impreza. Only one word I've ever needed to say there... Byeeee!
You're spot on about the Beemers though. Absolute s the lot of 'em. Boring Motors for Wasters... or something similar... |

A subaru might burn off an XR2i, but it should do being a 2 litre turbo with 4 wheel drive

Mate, we both know that, but it's amazing how many XR2, Nova SRi, Escort RS Turbo, Renault 5 Turbo drivers didn't.
I say "didn't" cos I sold the Scooby a couple of years ago. It was brilliant fun though. Actually got a confession to make there. Once had a proper boy racer revving away next to me in a Renault 5 - so I smiled at him and floored it... and he blew my doors off |

Touche mon ami!
Once had a traffic light GP with a Ducati Monster and won! But only cos he stalled I really expected to be blown away - just wanted to see (and hear) it go... Though I don't ride, a few of my mates do, so I guess I've picked up an appreciation of bikes, their performance and when to give them room ... used to have great fun with them over the Cat & Fiddle - give 'em room and watch 'em go down the straights, then catch them again round the twisty bits. |

- transport a load of BMW's 1000 km to the north, to Denmark (neglecting the ports of Antwerpen, Rotterdam and Hamburg) - cross the sea to Sweden - tranport them more than 500 km to Norway - transport them by ship more than 1000 km to the south (passing Antwerpen and Rotterdam at less than 100 km) - and end up in the channel, less than 600 km from the starting point. Is this some cunning plan to make those cars more expensive? |
