Who's the best starter in the field??
Who's the best starter in the field?? If there was a championship for the best starter, than I think this would be the ranking:
1. Jos Verstappen 2. Juan Pablo Montoya 3. Ralph Schumacher What do you think?? A die hard Villeneuve fan!! |

This race it has to be DC.
We are comparing to teammates here right?  (DC had a brilliant start nonetheless, right up the inside of Schumacher who started on pole while DC started uhm....7th right?) |

It wasn't that long ago that Villeneuve was the worst starter in the field! Remember 1996 and 1997? He was guaranteed to lose 2 places or more... I guess he learned...
And yes, the Williams launch control engineers. |

Without launch control, which takes away all the skill of the start, Alesi and Villeneuve are the ones to beat.

DC was fine off the line but really blew his first corner. He was alongside TGF but braked way to early and just let third place slip through his fingers.
We know know which zillion dolar teams are just wasting their money on booze, coke and go-go girls, but shouldn't they be a little ashamed to have some many cars left stranded and some really crippling off the line? If F1 proved anything last weekend it's that's still as non-professional as any hillclimber basically. |

I think it will be very hard to compare them.
Jos usually makes up a lot of places during the first round. The Ralf and Montoya are often on one of the front rows. So they simply can not pass the same number of drivers during the first kilometer. But nobody can tell what Jos would do if he were to start from one of the front rows. I would expect the competition to be a lot harder over there. Don K. |

Steve> Jos wasn't ecceptionaly quick out of the startingblocks. Bernoldi was ahead of him up to the first corner. Well, since you are comparing him to launchcontrol and all. It's not a matter of reflex, just a matter of getting around the chaos. Launchcontrol doesn't do that for you.

Nobody's perfect, you can't expect them to do amazingly every time and Villeneuve doesn't seem to be starting as brilliantly as he was last year.
F1 racing magazine last September said it could be because the engine had enough mid-range torque to run a lower 1st gear than most, putting them ahead of their mid-grid rivals. Or something like that, I didn't really get it. |

And MF: Jos rarely makes those excursions anymore, when it does usualy something is wrong with the car(like the brakes in spain or the flat tyre in qualifying in austria, Jos also had a broken rear suspension in free practice) |

Yes I think the williams cars are the besr starters, maybr it is the device, but they are both great drivers. Besides them I think JV knows when to launch his car too.

And this years worst starter.... the envelope please... Mika Hakkinen.
With regards to Verstappen... Don't forget the guy was running with way less fuel in the car so he had better be able to pass people on the start. Last year... Jacques was the best starter of the top 10. Always seemed to gain 3-4 places. Then hold up the field behind him. With the intro of Launch control... I think that Jaguar (though I hate to admit it) have been the class of the field. Also when discussing starts I think there should be some honorable mention given to Fischicella for making last seasons WDC interesting by punting off a certain sourkraut. |
