£500K lottery win - What would you buy and why?

Sadly it's not true. But just imagine a win circa £500k, conditional that it must be spent one or more historic road or race cars.What would you go for and why? Me I'd try the stunning Maserati A6GCS, which I don't think found a buyer, at Bonhams sale on Dec 2nd, despite a £540,000 bid.

Well I'd buy a Porsche 962 and then a Turbo f1 car if there was enough change!

The Porsche, simply because I love them so much and I wanna emulate the old man!

The turbo F1 car, well I've heard that they are absolutely awesome to drive and they look and sound fantastic!

Porsche 962 - great choice. Only one problem. As it's possibly the ultimate track car, you might need considerable skill and ability to get respectable lap times.You don't want to be outcornered by Tim D, in his newly aquired Lister jag!

Can I make a slightly different suggestion? I'd spend only a small amount of the money on the car, something small like a Mini or Ford Anglia, and then spend the balance on 'living it up' touring the car around the historic meetings of Europe for a few years.

finish my MK1 GT and race it, a mint MK1 Lotus Cortina for everyday use, and I quite fancy a Diva . . . .saw one at Spa in September, it was tiny, great looking . . .and fast, wouldnt fancy crashing in it though.

Yeah he raced Formula Ford, F3 and Group C Sportscars during the 80's and early 90's. Got started in motor racing via a BBC TV program which got him started in cars, he'd raced karts previously.

Always struggled for money throughout his career but managed to achieve so much with the little he had! And he did win the Formula Ford Star of Tomorrow Championship in a supposedly inferior car!

500K will most of the worlds,most desirable historic kit.So why, have we only gota brace of Le Mans Porsche/Bentley, one Chaparral and one Mclaren. I'm a long
time fan of classic Fords, especially Escort rally cars, but c'mon team,this is the big break. Forget running the monster, think about, just sneaking up on it in the garage and running you hand down the hand beaten (and dented) flanks,peer into the cockpit where hero's once sat...............Getting the idea?

So I think i'll just get a couple of classic FFords and spend the money on racing them. I would run them under my university's name so that I can aim to beat the Lancashire uni squad.

I would buy several Bathurst 1000 winners, the 2001 or 2002 victor to do the Konica series, the 1982/83 or 1984 victor and either 1978 or 1979 to race in Group C. I'd also grab the 1990 winner as well.

Porsche 550 for a fair-weather daily driver.

1970 Chevrolet Camaro with a modern powertrain for all-season driving. 427-inch EFI V8, six-speed, etc.

An early 1960s GMC or Chevrolet full-size truck, dually, converted into a flatbed hauler with full hydraulic lift, for transporting my race cars when they can't be driven to and from events, and also for bringing home potential project or parts cars. Largest Isuzu turbodiesel I can cram under the hood, TH400 transmission. Also useful for plowing snow in the winter.

1967 Eagle-Westlake, Spice Pontiac Fiero with a 4.2L turbocharged V6 (handsomest GTP/Group C car in my opinion), and a mid-70s March F5000 for vintage racing.

And a Group A Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI for real competition.

my friends, in my humble opinion there is only one contender and its just got to be a Ferrari 312PB, the most beautiful 3 litre sports car ever to grace the tracks in my lifetime. How I wish I could have been at Spa or Monza to watch Ickx, Peterson et al dominate World cahmpionship Sports car races....

Funny you should say that. The pictured car was Jim Clark's 1968 Type49 (R4) which he won the South African GP with. The car had an accident and caught fire. It was subsequently 're-built'.

It had a sign on it saying it was available for rent or to buy. Don't know what the rental cost was but the sale price was £500,000.
