Ayrton Senna tested a Penske Indycar at Firebird raceway in Arizona, USA
(taken from on this day.)

Also if you search there was a thread about when he tested the car and comparing it to an F1 car.

It wasn't on an oval.

It was at the Firebird test circuit in Arizona.

As I recall he was impressed with the car in terms of the input needed from the drivers and set times which were on the pace.

However, he didn't want to take the risk of racing on ovals

He wasn't interested in racing Indy full stop. Mansell has just moved to Newman-Haas, and Senna was trying to threaten McLaren-Ford that he would also go. Whilst i'm sure he enjoyed driving a different car, it was never really on the cards that he would go.

Although Mario, (I think) tried to add him to the grid or the 500, that would have been amazing.

Great Pics!

It is odd, it isn't that long ago, yet it seems so innocent.

I read in one of the racing mags recently in a article about senna, that he really didn't like the penske at all, but said nice things about it publically to be polite.

Actually I doubt he would have died sooner. By 1993 the death rate in CART wasn't that high and CART cars were reasonably well constructed. their was a massive shift in regulation safety during 1992. As a F1 driver he'd have done really well. As Armco Bender noted it wasn't a serious test. Really more to wind Ron Dennis and the journo's up. I don;'t know about his private comments but publicly he supported the lack of active suspension and driver aids that were just starting to become prevalent in F1.

Its amazing how much press Indycar racing suddenly got when Mansell and Senna were thinking about an Indycar switch ....their press people must have thought xmas had come early that year !...

for me , the 1993 Indycar World series was one of the best seasons of Motorsport i have ever witnessed .

It was just Top Class !

And having been watching that season on DVD reaffirms what Sato san has to say here. Nige was really quite unbelievable - but I thorough enjoyed it the first time 'round and now watching the races again!
