Volvo DTM

I dont know if this has been posted before but what happend to the Volvo C70 that was supposed to take part in the 2000 DTM.
Autosport showed a pic of it in the garage. Jorg van omen was the driver and Zakspeed was the team

Volvo didn't give permission for Zakspeed to race it in the DTM. Instead, what I have heard, it ran some longdistance races instead...

It ran in the Nurburgring 24hrs last year. Zakspeed had a website with some more details. Have a search through the forums, I know it was listed here.

How come Audi doesn't enter more cars in the DTM? The Audis are obviously very successful.

the audis are only semi-works cars run by Abt motorsport, they simply don't have the budget to run more cars!

I think Abt have judged what they can do with so many cars to a budget to perfection !

I believe the C70 suffered a mechanical failure at the'00 24 hours of Nurburgring. I don't think Zaskpeed raced it in '01? It was a major disappointment the C70 never got to go up against MB/Opel/Audi. Could the C70 have beaten the Audi? It was their weak year. Was Zakspeed able to find enough sponsors to even race the car? Would it have been ProMarkt? I wonder how many C70s were built?

I don't think Volvo will enter the DTM while they have just entered the ETCC. Maybe in a few years.

Right now, Volvos are in the FIA ETCC and they use to field Volvo in the BTCC awhile back. They left the series due to high cost and engine modification rules.

Hmmm, I just never understood the logic! I can't imagine why any "sane" company would turn down an offer from someone to promote your product for free. I could understand if the team was a backyard/garage team, but this was Zakspeed after all! They may not be the best/brightest, but certainly, they weren't a bunch of idiots either!

True, but Audi and Mercedes are there competition and obviously it would've still got beat from time to time (if not all the time). Besides, that isn't the models that Volvo want to promote anyway, they like they're saloons.

It was all down to that the C70 was at that time about to stop being produced... Not making much sense promoting a old car eh?

I have a feeling that the C70 could be in the BTCC if not next year, but 2004.

Would have been good to have seen it with a V8 in it though.

Now If I remember, once the DTM thing fell through, they were thinking of trying to run the car in the V8-STAR shadow touring car series as well, but I think that got ditched - they're now running two of these rather fetching Jags in the series instead:

Fine if the car goes well but what if it was several seconds off the pace, blew it's engine regularly and generally unreliable. That's not the sort of image you want to promote.

Insidently it's much the same reason that the Jaguar in the picture isn't a Jaguar. V8-Star are not allowed to use the Jag name or any logos on the car.

The Volvo should start at 24h race on the Nürburgring 2000 and had the seventh fastest time.
But they had some techniqual difficulties, so the couldn't start.
2001 they wanted to start again, but they didn't. Why, I don't know.
I hope I could help you a little bit.

But perhaps the DTM could jumpstart their sales like crazy or just help them sell their annual production a bit easier?

That is a more valid and convincing argument.

But even if their is no manufacturer badging, perhaps some people can recognize the shape. Again, it's better than nothing.

Judging from Zakspeed's past racing history, what kind of job do you think they could do? Could they prepare a reasonably reliable car or a constantly breaking down car. Again, past performance doesn't equal future performance, but c'mon, what are people's thoughts?

So how about we take a vote? If you were Volvo management, would you have let Zakspeed build/race your company's C70.

I am a Volvo fan, and I think that that DTM C70 was one of the most ugly cars I've seen. Zakspeed too a sledge hammer to a beautiful road car!
Has the C70 production line stopped now, or will in the future?

www.v8star.de - however, it's all in German. If your Deutsch isn't up to much though:

Pictures can be found in Multimedia> Fotos

Results in Ergebnisse (then select the number for which round you want)

Teams/Fahrer for teams and drivers

Statistik for points standings

Termine for the calender

And that should see you clear.

I've seen a couple of rounds of the championship on the telly. It's not as good as, say, the DTM, but it's does make for some good viewing.
