That just makes the project even more questionable. If you were going to use any ICE for this type of competition, I'm not sure the rotary is most people's first choice.

Well, it's obvious that it won't cut it in the LMP1 class. However, what about GTE and LMP2 when it comes to Wankel Engines?

I believe Mazda is talking about using the rotary again, and have long been working on fuel cell tech. Becoming associated in a project like this, and returning to LeMans in G56 would be a good marketing ploy for them.

McLaren? Ford? Honda? Audi? New privateer team with an existing car (would love to see a better-supported Ferrari programme stateside)?

It's McLaren, the 650S GT3 is ready to be a GTE with new bodywork, and some small changes with mechanical bits.

Ford is going to be here, just a matter of when.

The manufacturers are going to force a GTE/3 convergence by building a chassis that is similar enough to be used in both.

Audi-eventually.
Honda-no.
Lexus-very doubtful

Christian Mogami has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
HPD has been working on the NSX GTE since 2012.

The production 2016 NSX will be shown at Detroit in January 2015 and you can order it in March 2015 with delivery starting Summer 2015.

The original plan was to race it before it goes on sale.

The only problem is they what to race it Hybrid.

But in 2013 they switched the power-train layout from Transverse to longitudinal and from a old production 60 degree SOHC V6tt to a street legal racing engine(very compact with no external belt to run auxiliaries)90 degree DOHC V6.

So they will run it without hybrid or will get a waiver.

I think that would be a good start. Although I would be more than happy to see a manufacturer step up out of the left-field.

The Lexus GTE exist, albeit in an older form. The Mclaren GTE was on the cards. Honda want to race the NSX at Le Mans. I really can't tell which one is closest. They all have cars in the wings.

You say Ford will be here but Lexus is doubtful. Ford was only rumored to be counting on a convergence thats not likely. Lexus otoh has expressed interest in having the RC F run at Le Mans and even have a car thats been developed. Id think its more likely to see them than Ford. If this rumor even pans out

Yup

IIRC

Ford racing only put out money to partially help Robertson racing switch to michelins. The rest was all Robertson racing and matech.At least those where the most memorable.

Seriously though I would say McLaren. That 650 GT3 revealed on the weekend looks like it could be converted to a GTE a lot easier then most GT3 cars.
