Sarah to F1?

Sarah to F1? ...I hardly think so. Not that long ago I was blasting her, but in recent races she has earned back a little of my respect. But not THAT much!

But her career is certainly moving forward...

Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has signed race driver Sarah Fisher to a longterm endorsement contract.

TAG Heuer is the official timekeeper for the Formula One series and will introduce a new piece, the "F1 Micrograph," with Fisher at the U.S. Grand Prix next month at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"If one woman will ever make it to Formula One, it will be Sarah Fisher," TAG Heuer president and CEO Jean-Christophe Babin said Wednesday. "She's so talented, determined and young but still so experienced that, without a doubt, she will grow to become a great champion."



My guess is that the CEO of T/H thinks she has a nice bottom.

I think Sarah Fisher should think about running in the cart series if she wants to further her carrer. I mean running all ovals is certainly not a great display of ones talent is it! what a joke to even say something like that. I could spend 5 days in an I R L car and be racing at the front if i had a good car and so could anyone else. Its a true test of a drivers talent to race road, street, and ovals and cart is the only series that does that. Just look at all the grandpa's in Nascar. Do you think for a moment that dale jarret would have a chance on long beach with any of the cart drivers? No way!!!!! If sarah wants a chance a the big time, she needs to get out of that pathetic "cart has been" series and get a ride with cart. But thats just my opinion......

I don't know if I'd go that far, but she definately needs to show that she can turn right in a professional series before she could be considered even a candidate for F1. If she has any chance of F1, she had better get her butt in a Champ Car ASAP. Although, I'm not even sure she'd be ready for that...a year in Atlantics might not be a bad idea.

Doubtless she is more talented than I was as a driver (sigh) but I have seen nothing that makes her F1 material. I think she would have a difficult time in CART given the small amount of top-level road racing she has done. That amount may actually be nil - not sure on that point!

TAG-Heuer is just diversifying their marketing, not fast-forwarding her to an F1 career.

Unless I'm wrong her career has been all ovals. Midgets, etc.. The only road/Street type racing I'm aware of was this years Pro/Celeb race at LB, where Danica waxed her good. Bernie thinks very highly of Ms Patrick as well. Sarah would need to forgo ovals, run Atlantics or F3000 (if could even do that without some runs in lower formulas) & I don't believe she's going to be willing to do that. From her statements while unemployed concerning F1 she either tried to use F1 as leverage, or she's deluding herself that her background gives her even a chance in F1 at his time. This isn't meant as a slam to her, but she just doesn't have the tools & I seriously doubt she will give up what she has to get them. Danica on the other hand is climbing the proper ladder for a shot in CART, or very possibly at least a test in F! in a few years time.

I saw Danica at Mid Ohio doing the Barber Dodge thing - she looked quite competent from my vantage point. No offense to Sarah but I would like to see her do FF2000 or Barber Dodge first before she went to Atlantics of F3000. Bravery is not in question (Little Al hasn't threatened to punch her out - yet) but some of those guys in the lower formulas drive like they have fenders!

I thought she was brought up on road courses and went to ovals, but if she was brought up on ovals she doesn't have a chance and would probably struggle in Atlantics, never mind Cart or F1. She should stick to what she's good at.

Danica is the best hope of a female Cart driver, but honestly she still has a long way to go. There are a lot of drivers ahead of her that would be more deserving of a Cart ride. I guess we'll see what she can do next year...

I guess Tag Heuer can give Sara increased media spotlight, but are they contributing anything (significant) to her racing team? It would be nice it Tag will sponsor and support her financially as she moves around and up the racing ladder?

OTOH, any help, even if it's just media coverage can't hurt an aspiring CART/F1 driver?

Her background seems to be midgets. She probably gets lost when driving around in the city because she doesn't know how to make a right-hand turn.

Sarah grew up racing karts on road courses, she whipped me good whenever I got to race her!

I think she would have no problem leaving the roundy-rounds behind for the twisties, but F1??? I doubt it... Would be nice to see her try her hand in CART.

Sarah in F1? No way.I don't feel that there is anyone in the IRL with the talent to go F1 or they'd be in Alantics or CART.Fisher is at home where she is.Just my opinion.

Talking about the wrong Sara(h)

When Ferrari, following the dismissal of René Arnoux, signed Stefan Johansson as his replacement - back in April 1985 -, I joked that Maranello had contracted the wrong Stefan, as they missed the opportunity of hiring one of the best drivers to ever drive a Formula 1: Stefan Bellof.

Leaving aside proportions, a similar situation is faced today in the IRL. The media and the paddock is talking about the worng Sara(h). If there is a woman that could really succeed in this series, she is not Sarah Fisher. Should I be a team owner, I would hire Sara Senske.

Senske is much more experienced than Fisher, has a more diverse racing background, is a more regular (paced) driver, and has proved that she can handle a fast car consistently - Fisher definitely cannot, and racing is all about consistency.

I really hope Sara Senske gets a decent seat one day - the kind of trouble she causes on track is of different nature than Sarah Fisher.

Senske would much rather race in Cart, but then most of them would...still, if she doesn't mind ovals she might be willing to try IRL for a while... although, from everyone I talked to in Montreal, I gather that the new guys coming up in Atlantics want nothing to do with ovals or the IRL.

Fisher doesn't have a prayer to make it to F1 as an oval racer in the IRL...I think I have a better chance to make it to F1 than she does.

More bad news...having seen Danica Patrick race a few times now, I don't think she's anything special and would be very lucky to make it to Cart. F1 is only possible if she has her way payed.

I spoke with a corner worker at Mosport who was quite familiar with Sarah's history and talents, and this person said plainly that if Sarah were not a girl, she would not be in racing on a professional level.

The idea of her in F1 is just silly.

I admire Sarah for her will to race, just like Sarah Kavangah, but she wouldnt cut it in F1....to this day, only Lella Lombardi has even shown a high degree of compentency in F1.

I take it that you mean this as a bad thing.... and I guess the guys at Pikes Peak said the same in 1984.

Having said that, I'd tend to agree with the other posts - there's a big gap to F1 and there's only a few that have the talent to get there.

Having watched Dancia's progress this season from fairly close quarters (by that I mean flag points!) I agree with Jay that her style has not kept up with expectations, hopefully only a small glitch which she can overcome.

I have no first hand knowlegde of Sara(h) (which is correct, I have seen both used), so won't comment on second hand views, but for me the only woman was the "Tigress"....
and I was privalaged to watch her drive.

Sarah Fisher to drive McLaren
IRL star to be first women to drive F1 car in a decade

Sarah Fisher will become the first women to drive a contemporary Formula 1 car in over a decade when she performs a demonstration run in a McLaren MP4-17 after Friday's Free Practice for the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis next weekend.

The 21-year-old made history earlier this year by being the first female ever to take a pole position for an Indy Racing League event, when she set the pace in qualifying for the Belterra Casino 300 at the Kentucky Speedway.

As an Indianapolis native, she's naturally delighted to get the chance to drive the Mercedes-powered car in front of her home fans.

"I'm obviously very excited about driving a Formula 1 car," she said. "It's extremely rare to get a chance like this and I can't wait. I'm grateful to TAG Heuer, Bernie Ecclestone and West McLaren Mercedes for making this happen, and hopefully it will help to promote Formula 1 in the USA and will also bring international attention to my series, the Indy Racing League as well."

McLaren's managing director, Martin Whitmarsh said: "We are pleased to provide Sarah with this one-off opportunity. Through our 39-year history we have never had a female drive one of our Formula 1 cars so I guess it's about time. Hopefully Sarah's demonstration will assist in promoting Formula 1 in America further and give her a taste of the category."

The last women to drive a Formula 1 car was Giovanna Amati who unsuccessfully attempted to qualify a Brabham during the first half of the 1992 season. The most successful female driver in F1 was another Italian, Lella Lombardi, who finished sixth in the 1975 Spanish GP. The race was cut short due to an accident, so she only received half a point for her efforts.
