Personally I have a single thought in my head right now...

Eat Your Heart Out, Batman!

Do the drivers now have capes, d'you think?

If it was built to win LeMans, and I'm sure it was, then remember the pits are on the right side of the track there. The drivers don't have to run around the car to change.

Of course, Audi may have hired all British drivers, thus requiring the steering wheel on the CORRECT side of the car?

And who said the rear wing was wider than the body? Are they looking at teh same images as me????

Perhaps with the driver changes, being on the right side is easier for entrance and exit. Just my guess.

Initial response here was positive. I quite like what they've done with the front of the car, even if it does look busier. The geometry of the cockpit seems similar to the Bentley, at least to me.

The size of those front wheel archs is really highlighted in the images, and not just the width. They're enormous!

As a sidenote, it also looks like they've ditched the trademark LED-strips around the headlights.

There are some nice high res (3840 x 2560) images of the car from most angles, here:

It seems that the headlights are mostly LEDs, if not all LEDs.

I think that the biggest Audi R8 reference that it has is the compact engine, 6 speed gearbox, more even weight distibution, and a fairly short wheelbase like what the 90X seems to have.

The stance at a low angle reminds me of HJ Stuck Sr's Audi. The black does not help. It's ALL about efficiency and nothing to do with beauty. I understand why it looks like it does. However I'm not gushing.
Lets see what it does when it counts, and that is only one race. What is to be gained by running an obsolete (virtually) car at Sebring?

ILMC manufacturer/team points, I'm guessing.

Amen brother! Though I am a life long Audi fan, it will be hard to accept those ugly middle fins on this years entries. And as you say, on all the prototypes. Looks like the helmet from the movie "The Rocketeer"!

But I do admit, I will miss the spyders, I enjoy watching the guys at work!

Is there something particular related to the powertrain regulations which forced both the diesel behemoths to go to pretty massive roof-mounted air intakes?

Looks just a very tiny bit like a R15 with a roof thrown in. Not sure about the look of the tall headlights and the ultra-wide front wheelarches... in any case though, Le Mans next year should be EXTREMELY interesting, especially with both teams having hit the sweet spot in terms of driver trios. LM - Audi vs. Peugeot, round 5, BRING IT ON!

According to Marshall Pruett, both the R18 and the 90X have gone for wide fronts, but not the same compound as the rears: apparently the ultra-wide fronts are a different construction, and in the region of 20mm narrower than the rears.

http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/artic...he-audi-r18/P4

Once both cars are racing and everything about them is discovered step-by-step, true comparisons between them are going to be an engineer's wet dream.

As Martin Haven would probably say, "I think the words you're looking for are <<lulling>> and <<false sense of security>>"... at least for people who are prepared to believe that those are final figures.

I wonder, since the inside of the front fenders appears to still be the "bolt on" addition, is it possible that, if the wide front tires plan fails as it did on the Acura, the R18 fenders could be easily modified to fit the narrower normal tires?
