I remember that!

Time to dig out my old dvds and maybe I might upload it into YouTube.

Nycuk, what do you remember about the race? I am interested in your views.

Hi Bigears, to be honest - not a lot! I remember I'd been to Spa Francorchamps for the GP the previous day and was lying knackered on the sofa!

Was this the year that Barbazza had that big accident? Seem to recall this...
I checked Wikipedia for a memory jogger but for some reason every race except 1990 is mentioned.

In fact, the thing that most amused me I remember was an extremely wooden 'pep-talk' staged between Mansell and his two drivers Andrea Montermini and Pedro Chaves in the pre-race run up. I don't know where J-M Gounon was hiding!

Look forward to the You Tube uploads!

I have been doing some research into the Birmingham Superprix lately for my website.

I have just uploaded the first part of the 1988 Birmingham Superprix and hoepfully I will be able to complete it before February.

Anyway, as I never went to the Birmingham Superprix as I was only about 3 when the F3000 cars lapped the BSP track.

So I am wondering if anyone out there got any fantastic photos. If you prefer, PM me and we can discuss about it.

Thank you.

Please keep your memories and informative posts coming into this thread!

I'll let other guys spot where and when.
(First corner out of garage area by the NCP)
I was leading Robinson in Class B 911s.
During practise, I'd ended up broadside into those tyres on the armco there, everso gently! You just couldn't trust braking late![IMG][/IMG]

Lovely photo there! It must be 1988 at the Zenith Data corner.

But I can't see your name mentioned in the 1988-1990 entry lists though.

Just a slight off topic question but it is still relevant about the BSP>

According to my research, the Birmingham City Council sponsored a race at Mallory Park in 1970.

What and when the race took place?

I must be the saddest git on the planet at the moment as I have stepped up my hobby about the Birmingham Superprix.

I have just contacted a safety barrier company near Birmingham and they said they got the original Armco barriers used for the Birmingham Superprix.

I went there and immediately recognised the white, red and blue stickers on different piles of Armco beams in the compound. A chap there was so helpful and provided me a lot of information about it. I took some photos:

The Armco above must be from this track section on the right of the photo there:

Seems like the Armco are still stuck in time since 1990.

Travelling back after the first practice, an impromptu water pistol fight was started between the teams (and we were the only team with pistols!). By the second practice, all other teams came armed with buckets etc, and one team had even filled a pressurised fire extinguisher with water. The BTCC was still fun in those days.

One final memory was seeing the Eggenberger team race preparing their car at the side of the road, as they couldn't get back to the 'paddock' in time before the interior roads were closed again.

Happy days...
Did the Eggenberger team did actually go out of the paddock and was waiting on a road? As I got a story from Motoring News saying that it only went to the paddock gate.

Also the BTCC water fight, what did that happen exactly?

Oh no! If I was featured then the BBC would have to fork out for a British Sign Language interpreter!

Doubt they would be able to afford it!

I only contributed a bit of research into it, I don't know what to expect in the programme.

I only saw a small snippet of Luis Perez Sala in the wet and Andrew Gilbert Scott crashing out from last week's Inside Out programme.

:P

When I saw that camera filming the BSP photos, I recognised the 1987 Julian Bailey and the Fiesta photos!

It was a very interesting programme, plenty of unseen footage there.

Hope someone will take notice of the programme and makes things happen again.

It was quite a good piece. The chap reading out the 'edict' in the library re-affirmed why the organisers had a job on to make any changes that might have made running the event a bit easier.

I.E, Can run it for 2 days only, on no other dates, if not making money after 5years it's pulled.

Erm, how many motor race events make money???!!!! Most GP's certainly don't and the Superpirx people probably had to pay Bernie something for the right to host FIA event anyway?!

There was some geezer on local radio the other day who mentioned that the race put the city on the map sporting and commercially wise - for me that was the main point of the event - the PR value.

The International TV coverage, sponsors, some celebs etcc was all good value. I mean Cadbury's and Lucas saw a prime marketing opportunity in sponsoring cars.

However short sighted councillors only have budgets and constituents to think about

It is due to lack of experience and high expactations. After the problems of the 1986 BSP, the council would discover that the 2-day schedule is too tight and they expected too much into it and it ended up with too many problems with the flexibility and the budgets.

Dead right mate,

They also arguably got a bit too big for their boots when thinking if they got the bill extended from 2 to 3 days they might get a sniff at a GP. That was never really on the cards but it didn't stop the local and specialist press banging on about it.

God I still miss it all though - even late Stephane Proulx nearly bursting my left ear drum when he stopped alongside me (out of vision) when I was facing straight ahead - my ears didn't fancy it much when he did a massive tyre warming burn out and the DFV hitting it's 9000 rpm limit!!!

God, I wish I was born a few years earlier and my family followed motorsport so I would have liked to go there!

It is not just the council but it is the expectations of the people, they was expecting a Grand Prix rather than watching a group of hot-headed foreign youngsters behind those F3000 cars.

Again, it was down to the media that exposed it into the people of Birmingham and across the country.

Hi,

This is my first post on ten tenths though I have been reading the forum for ages (especialy this thread ).

I went to the Superprix the last two years it was run, I'm afraid I have no memory of it though as I was 1 month old in 89 and 1 year old in 1990 . I live in North East Birmingham (Erdington to be exact) and was amazed when I got into Motorsport in 2004 that my city had held such an event, and I had been to it!!! For years I had been trying to find proper information about it but I only ever found one site (which didn't have much). This was until I found your forix page Bigears and your large collection of video clips on you tube. So I just want to say well done on the amount of research you have done on the superprix, I look forward to further updates of your site in future (especially 89, 90 and the despise of the superprix).

My dad has some pictures of the superprix, their mainly shots of the cars at the Halfords hairpin in 89 (some 90). I could try and scan them if your interested.

Firstly, welcome to the forum, I hpe you will enjoy your stay in here!

Thank you for your kind comments about my website and my video clips I uploaded at YouTube.

I would love to see the photos your father took at the 1989 and 1990 BSP, it would help a lot for my research about the BSP.

There was a story of a driver of not allowed to recce the track before the weekend in a road car as he had his driving licence revoked.

Was it Julian Bailey in 1987?

I got a question regarding about the Thundersport round at the Birmingham Superprix in 1986.

In the past, I thought I understood the whole timetable like this:

Sunday
1030-1130 Thundersports Heat 1 qualifying session (60 minutes)
1150-1250 Thundersports Heat 2 qualifying session (60 minutes)

1550 Race 1 Thundersports Heat 1, 10 laps
1620 Race 2 Thundersports Heat 2, 10 laps

Monday
13.00 Race 4 Thundersports 30 laps

_____________________
Now the question is, how did the two Heat races worked with the qualifying sessions? The whole Thundersport timetable was a farce and I have just dug up more problems! I will keep you posted soon.

Changing the subject very slightly, have you got the complete entry lists for the BTCC races, particularly the 1988 race that never happened?

I've recently been looking at old BTCC results and I'm trying to fill in some gaps I've got in my knowledge. I believe Nick Whale was on the entry list in '88, but driving what? At the time he was running an M3 in prodsaloons as I remember, but I've no idea what he drove at Birmingham- I think, but can't swear, that he was last qualifier, so I suspect either his regular Prodsaloon, or a 1600cc class car, maybe one of Chris Hodgetts' Toyotas .

What I'd really like to find is a complete rundown of the grid- I've got a fair part of it from the Motoring News 'race' report, but I've got several gaps
