Hubert Hahne from circa 1970 I think. So the story goes, he was adamant that he was so quick and the March was so slow, he wanted his money back. As a compromise Herd and/or Mosley agreed to do so, provided they could let Ronnie Peterson out in the car, just to see how bad it was. Peterson subsequently went several seconds a lap faster and... well, end of story really!

Yes, a brilliant story. He had claimed that his customer car was a MUCH lower spec than the works cars. At the test, not only did Ronnie go several seconds quicker than Hahne he apparently also went quicker than he had gone in his own car. Hahne went back to Germany, never to be seen again....

You could also include Colin Chapman. I think it was 1958 when he tried to qualify a Vanwall. Don't recall the circuit though.

Just goes to show how easily pleased some people are. It also shows that there is a big difference between the disciplines.

Of course only someone from Berkeley would know what a snob is!
Thanks for your contribution to the topic, but since the only driver's name in your posts was Prost, I have to disagree. Prost might have been a ***** team owner but I think this is a thread for the worst drivers! Last edited by Adam43; 29 Mar 2003 at 17:33. |

Please attack the post and not the poster! It's just an amusing light hearted thread afterall.

Chapman was at the French GP in 1956, but he had the rep of a good driver.
If Deletraz was so bad, how come he had a couple of podia in F3000? When it was competitive? That alone has to elevate him above the likes of Campos and Lavaggi. And Rosset was a race winner. If we are talking about RACING in F1, then Ottorino Volonterio, who managed to be non-classified at the Nurburgring (lapped 6x in a 22 lap race), has to be close. If we are talking about those who never qualified, Otto Stuppacher takes the cake, he would have needed a 130% rule to qualify (2'11" at the Glen in 1976, when pole time was in the low 1'40s). And Giovanna Amati is probably still trying to complete a flying lap from the 1992 Brazilian GP. Of those who scored points, Pedro Diniz. Did he ever win a race of any description anywhere? |

It was 1956 when Chapman drove in practice for the French GP.

Campos and Lavaggi never stalled on the racing line like Deletrash did. Deletrash never seemed to pay up either.

Ricardo Rosset. Unlike some you always got the impression there was some speed there, but his mental strength was non-existant and as he got more and more depressed over the 1998 season his performances became embarassing.....for example his pathetic display in Monace qualifying......the funniest/saddest thing I have ever seen.

I am going to go with the modern answer:
Yoong, but honestly I had forgotten that B-ernie had actually driven in F1 not just driven it into oblivion |

Steady 'ensign' on having a go at Giovanni Amati! The last interview I read with her suggested moe than a touch of fire in her veins... Better keep the extinguisher handy should she happen to cruise this forum.
