Goodwood marshalling

Hi all, merry Christmas an happy new year to you all!!
My wife an I have put our names down for all the festivals at goodwood speed etc. We're both still grades of trainee. Would we be accepted or rejected? If rejected means need to find other events to marshal for the goodwood dates! ;-( cheers Lee an sue

Trainees have been taken in the past, so you might be lucky!!!!

Generally, if you do not make it this time, you'll get a letter from BARC about 6-8 weeks before the event which then gives you time to look at any other events on at the same time.

My forms all arrived yesterday, and I believe I recall from scanning the Goodwood forms that trainees would not be accepted (but I wasn't paying too much attention, so might be wrong about that). As others have said though, it's worth putting down, if you want to go, as it's always possible they may turn up short in numbers or something.

They are never short of marshals for the Festival of Speed or the Revival. As previously said, i believe that trainees will not be accepted for these events. I'm sure I read that on the base of the BARC Goodwood volunteering sheets.

I can't comment because I don't have the forms yet! but surely they can't be turning down trainees, they didnt do that in previous years,

I must say I will only be able to attend the Revival for Sat/Sun I know I'd have no chance for selection if I didnt opt for all days with the FOS but the revival, it might be a little different, would I be ok? I think I might not but if anyone knows this isn't the case...

From the BARC "Provisional HQ Special Events" volunteering form, which covers the Goodwood events:

"Goodwood selection procedures.

Due to the large amount of volunteers we get for the Goodwood events, it is regretted that a selection process may have to be undertaken. We will be looking for a broad range of duties & experience but as a general rule any Race Assistants under the age of 16, Trainee Marshals or Drivers wishing to gain marshalling signatures will not be accepted."

Just got my forms through the post, confirm the words as above. First time I have noticed BARC putting it so specifically in writing, guess my trainee friends were lucky then in the years they did it.

Well there's a reason for upgrading then. The Revival is definitely high up my list of "things to do before I get too old" (though I may already have left it a bit late .

So no chance of upgrades between now and either of the Goodwood events then? 28 days should see you well into upgrade territory...

I was a trainee last year and was surprised to get into the FOS, However did not get Revival. Having said that I understand Historic meeting at BH on FOS weekend is very good too.

Lrawlings,
For Festival of Speed have you thought about spectator marshalling?
You are in front of the crowd and can see whats going on while doing your job, plus you get stand down time as well to look around.
OK so it's not on the bank as such but at least you can be part of the event, we have other members of the orange brigade help out rather than doing the bank.
Marshals are very well looked after we had well over a 100 raffle prizes last year, and if you do all three days you can get tickets for FoS to get your guests in or Revival so you can see what your letting your self in for in years to come!!
Also Thursday Evening is a Bar B Q for our marshals at our club pub just up the road.
Any one that offers is used that way you get more down time!!
Bognor Regis Motor Club look after the spectator marshals (you don't need to be a member) details on our website nearer the time.

What Pete said.

My very first experience in overalls was when some friends in the Redditch Car Club who are rally marshals talked Penny and I into helping as spectator marshals on the Forest Rally Stage at FoS. Enormous fun it was, too.

If you want to go to FoS/Revival it's definitely worth considering, though of course you won't get attendance signatures towards your upgrade. If you want to get to the upgrade there will be plenty of other things on to help out at.

Bar B Q is something we as a motor club do for Spectator marshals and happens every year, it's not a freebie but just a small charge to cover costs.
Handy for those arriving and setting up camp on Thursday, saves worrying about what/where to eat.
Sorry BARC marshals!
