Correct, plural of genius is geniuses
Genii is plural of Genie. But then electricity is a form of magic, so you're probably also correct! Do I presume, then, that the reason for the fast response is in order to have an electrician on the team? Lets hope there aren't multiple incidents. This also makes me think I'm not sure I want to drive something that may have another attempt to kill me if the original incident was unsuccessful... |

Not quite, I'm more interested in how it would be expected to work in this particular series. Having done Champ Car on a couple of occasions where the incident marshals are forbidden from going trackside, it's just a different way of doing things. In some cases it's better, in others worse. In the situation where dodgy - sorry, 'high-voltage' - electrics are involved I can see the case for it.
Anyway, the circuit. Is this going to be an American style street circuit? Concrete barriers and catch fencing? That's a lot of money to set up for what is an unproven series. Sort of appropriate that it's in the old power station though. Maybe the cars will run with cables to the mains! |

Agree that it's a whole new ball game and there is much to discuss seriously - but probably better when we KNOW who the organisers are and what THEIR plan is.
s'not the old power station though, it's the park across the road. http://binged.it/1kdF0xo No act of parliament to close roads, Boris just changes the local byelaws for the day - or something like that. Last edited by Bodysnatcher; 2 Jul 2014 at 12:57. Reason: bing cos googles up the creek |

True, seeing as Canary Wharf is within seeing distance of Brands Hatch. (Have to stop spectators joining in, through - )

I have seen electric power line crews working on live 20KVA lines with special equipment, maybe that is the way to deal with electric cars?

You should come and join us @ Silverstone next week for Formula Student, they've had electric cars for years, nothing to be afraid of, just be sensible.

The electrical safety systems in Formula E have been designed to make dealing with incidents subject to much less uncertainty (about possible electrical risks) than existing hybrid cars. This will reduce the need for rubber wear to an absolute minimum number of occasions and people.
The systems and their monitoring are designed to provide an indication either of clear safety or clearly unusual and potentially dangerous conditions. Only in the latter case will insulation and testing be called for. (Or so we are told!) There is also a pair of lights designed to show that the car is in a condition to move if the throttle pedal is pressed. Similar to knowing that a car's engine is running and hence could move without notice. Regards Jim |

Katrina - if it's the 2014 Houston crash with the Aleshin - Taku actually crashes in front of the response team. At 40 seconds in this clip they get out the pickup. The other giveaway that they are not "marshals" is the Holmatro overalls as opposed to the white gear of the guys that jump back as he hits the wall.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eELY3oMnYMQ In professional US races there is no such thing as a trackside incident marshal. |

We are told that they have undergone crash testing to F1 standards and that the risk of any "feasible" accident is very small. They are "certified to UN Transportation Standards as a minimum requirement" not least because every race is a Fly-away except Battersea.
The battery box looks brick outhouse in construction but I guess that only time will tell. See about 2/3 down this link: http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2...s-battery.aspx Jim |

The battery construction sounds good Jim.
the indicator lights are pretty much the standard for other electric/hybrid vehicles. Fine until, like Duval's crash at Le mans, the lights get destroyed in the impact. How's it going at Donington?- the live timing link for the first test seems broken... no it's not .. just connection issues (lol) ABT on a 1.37 others on 1.38s (F3 test earlier this year was about 1.30 so not too shabby) BTW the American issue is forced by insurers (or so I'm told) - most of the young ones (ie sub 60) would do intervention if allowed. Hey Jim, it's only Day 1 of "real" electric racing cars - pretty historic actually.
Comparisons with a test day are kinder than outright lap records since this is also a test day. |

Of course but it's nice to know what they might be aiming at.
