coln72 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
human powered vehicle design

Well it is time to build another HPV for my school to compete in couple of 24hr races and I have to decide between CrMo or aluminium.

The current HPV is 4130 CrMo but I was considering using aluminium. I feel that aluminium alloy would be acceptable but are unsure of the correct grade and heat treatment to use. Strength and fatigue are of a major concern due to the pounding these vehicles can take over 24hrs.

If anyone has any suggestions about either material it would be appreciated.

6061T6? Easy enough to weld and readily available. Or 2024T3 if you can find it. You can get both in either sheet or tube as well.

imull has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Remember though that when you weld Aluminium the properties radically change. The UTS of a welded joint drops so low that in order to compensate, it is lighter to use T45 steel ~ hence the reason that Lotus used rovers bonded chassis idea

It's not really answering your question but the www.pedalcars.info website is quite useful for all things HPV/Pedal cars.
And there's lots of teams/people with first hand experience from UK 24 hour races (French and Hong Kong 24h are planned to be competed in soon - money permitting)

Thanks for the link but our rules are slightly different
eg. we are allowed three wheelers and up to 8 riders in a team. The link to the local event is http://racvenergybreakthrough.net if you are interested. It is a school only event but there are others that allow any team to compete.

Cant attatch a pic to show people last years design and to ask for improvements. Stupid bloody computer........
