Mazda RX3 race cars?
I think in 1973 or 1974 Wizzo Williams was racing an RX3 in the BSCC, he told me he won a trip to race in Barbados for 'most spectacular drive' at a Mallory (I think) event but brought a Capri here rather than the Mazda.
Does anyone have any info, pictures, homologation forms for these cars? |

Greg, Whizzo raced an RX3 in the British Saloon Car series in 1974, and 75 I think, when it went to G1 regs. He won quite a few times in his class against the Dolomites. The less developed/cheaper Production saloon series were dominated by RX3s, in their class at least, from 1975 to about 77.

Thanks Dan. Would that have been Group1 spec cars then as opposed to the Gp2 of the previous years' Escorts, Capris, BMWs etc.? |

Yeah thats it Greg. Whizzo's RX3 raced in the 3rd class down, 1601-2500cc as I recall. So he was up against the Dollys, Magnums, the odd RS2000 and some Alfas. He had some backing from Japan Airlines, and was run by Mathwall I think

Greg.
You need to speak to Dave Nixon from Cheshire or somewhere near Oulton Park. He has raced one very successfully in Post Historics for many years. Im sure you could find him via the CTCRC. |

Thanks, e-mail sent to CTCRC.
Found much Group1 info on the Rx3, found no Group 2 info. Hoping to get the homologation forms shortly. |

Mazda Rx 3 Group 2/4
Did you get your homologation forms for the RX-3 - I think I might have some 1970s ones somewhere. I built and ran a couple of RX-3 coupes back in the mid 1970s - I can probably find a spec. for a pre 1976 car in Group 4 from the day. That was the best rally specification because there was some freedom for suspension mounting points and to get a RX-3 to handle, especially at the rear you need to mount properly in addition to the cart springs.

Hi Tim,
Terry Davis sent me FIA form 5544-73 with some Gp2 bits. The problem with historic rallying is that you can't interpret the period FIA Appendix J now, you have to prove 'period use'. In period, any floorpan mods would have been allowed so compression struts, long radius arms, watts linkage, addition coil-over springs in tall rear turrets, diff tunnel etc. all would have been allowed and all contributed to the Mk1 Escort's success. I can find no period proof of any of that for the RX3 and the Gp2 papers contain none of that since it was free. Without period proof of proper suspension the RX3's light weight and good engine cannot be exploited. |

I think I have some period photographs of the interior of my RX-3 in 1976 with the four link bars. We used to run with RX-2 coil overs, etc. I may have photographs - would that help?
I've been thinking of rebuilding the car in the photograph for UK Historic Rallying; it so long since I was involved that I didn't realise you had to prove period use. I'll see what I can find. Tim |

Good news Tim, period photographs or pictures of a current car that was used in period with a period logbook would crack the nut. Please e-mail me at greg at barbados rally carnival dot com and I'll help in any way I can.
However, the best class for the RX3 is category 2 for pre-'75 cars so I'm not sure how we'd get that done. If you were on the '76 RAC I'm guessing you would've been scrutineered with your homologation papers plus RAC logbook etc.? If you had an FIA HTP issued in UK (MSA can provide scrutineer) your car could become the standard. |

Remember that one Group 2 RX3 was raced in the 1976 ETCC, driven by Mazda UK PR man David Palmer and John Markey, some pics can be seen @ http://www.markeymotorsport.co.uk/?page_id=79

Just came across your thread on racing RX3s.
There were plenty of these gong round in the mid 70s in production saloons, John Bridley, Tony Lanfranchi, Gerry Marshall, Wendy Markey etc. My Dad, Terry Mayne used to race an RX3 in this class too. My cousin Alastair Smith also raced an RX3 in the Duckhams Road Saloons around 1984. Dad tuned the engine, got lap records at Snet and Donington. Put the cat among the pigeons a bit but rotaries always did that a bit Terri Mayne |

Aside from the tyres - what were the differences in HP and spec between the group 1 cars and the group 2 cars in the mid 70's. On Frank De Jong site it states that the group 1 cars made 175HP while the group 2 cars made 190HP. Can anyone add to that? (Weights, ratios etc)
