yeah, who else would stand out in all weathers, at their own expense, with little or no respect, just to let drivers have their fun ???

so why do we do it???????

because at times it can be the most thrilling, exciting, frightening and yet excillerating and emotional thing some of us do!!!

Don't ask us for answers, just accept that what we do is because we love it!!!!!

Not forgetting that it lets us play with soft toys even though we're grown up. And it's not just the marshals:

Mark Goodyear, having reversed is clubmans into the bank, his first words were "How's Tigger?" After carrying out the obvious medical checks, we discovered he was talking about the soft toy lashed to the rear wing support.

"Mad" Mick Jones on the RAC Rally once carried a Pudsey bear (it coincided with Children in Need that year) fastened to the tip of his whip aerial. He later exolained "I hate that *@%£$*! bear". He took every opportunity to drive under low hanging branches and still finished as top amateur, with the bear well and truly beyond repair. We held a short service for it at scrutineering and then cremated the remains in the corner of the garage. Mick of course had the final poignant words: "That showed you, you little &*%(*$&W!"

And they call the marshals odd?

Morris 1100 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I had a major, major off at Bathurst and ended up on top of a concrete wall sliding along the wall towards two flaggies, the two brave marshals looked at me sliding towards them, dropped their flags and run for their lives. Unfortunately with a sheer drop behind them and with me heading towards them all that they could do was run in circles! By sheer luck my car missed them and eventualy the car fell off the wall and back onto the track (and not over the edge)
After the meeting I was informed that I was the mongrel the run over Bear!
It turned out that Bear was hanging from a tree on a string and during my flight through the air and slide along the wall a had knocked the stuffing out of poor Bear!

He was taken into care and made a full recovery.

This bear has riden in V8 supercar races as well as sitting at various flagpoints around the country.

Um - grown men and women paying exorbitant amounts of money to pollute the atmosphere and put their lives at risk for the privilege of possibly, maybe, receiving a bit of tacky crystal with their name on it? That's pretty odd too don't you think Motorsport people ARE odd - and proud of it!
