With 700-ish drivers in the race it's rather more difficult to record driver changes than it is at Le Mans for example...

third consecutive red flag, for a big crash this time. Here's hoping the drivers are OK, nasty place to have an accident.

Perhaps... but I remember it being a bloody hot weekend here

Last year was bloody exhausting with only two weeks gap between 24h events.

Red flag was due to an accident involving Dirk Muller, according to Marc Lieb on Twitter.

Wow, the wreckage of that Ginetta is scary. I know modern race cars are built to shed as much bodywork by way of dissipating energy, but that's still a hell of a reminder about the dangers.

So SP9 class for the 24 Hours, I guess we're not expecting much to change from this, unless maybe an Alpina is added:

Audi sends something like a million R8s to the Nürburgring, yet it wouldn't make me wonder if they still don't the race.

Does the "u" stands for Ultra? If so.. All of them are Ultras:

Audi Sport Team Phoenix will field two "factory" cars while a total of four customer teams will race further five R8 LMS ultras.

They are running four DTM cars this year.. I think they are running on full capacity, they have no time for other things.

abt since years has ran in dtm, and honestly i don't know if they are still involved in dtm because before 2012 specs, they not only were running the official cars but they projected, built and developed the dtm car too, but this year it seems that audi and mercedes are directly involved in the competition, it seems that no more abt and hwa are involved. But even this my impression is not correct, abt beyond the involvment in dtm, in this years ran as factory team cars in VLN, ADAC GT and 24h of nurburgring. This year not anymore.

EDIT: errata corrige, abt and hwa still run 4 cars per brand

aye, but this year there's a much bigger focus on DTM with their new car. Abt race where Audi ask/pay them to and Audi's resources are focused on the new DTM, where their investment is.

Fortunately, WRT and Mamerow have stepped in, but don't yet appear to be on the pace. Makes me wonder if Mamerow regret giving up the Mercedes they were running at the front with last year yet.

I have one quick question.

What will be the top class (competing for the overall wins) at the ring for the 24hrs this year. I cant remember the exact names (SP8/9) but will it be broadly equivilent to GT2/GTEs or the equivalent to GT3 class??

SP9 = GT3, and that should be the top class. There isn't an equivalent for GT2/GTE, the Farnbacher Ferrari was in SP7 in 2010 (the 430 with a 4.0 L engine) and SP8 last year (the 458 with a 4.5 L engine) and that was classification based on engine size, while the GTE-spec BMWs were E1-XP2 which was an invitational class.

Winner will most likely come from SP9 which is a pure GT3 class.

Everyone knows what I think of the BMW M3 GT2s, but at this event I was actually kinda rooting for them during the last few years - just that we could have a non-GT3 overall winner. No Manthey and Farnbacher makes it less fun, too

P4/5's improved pace is very exciting though. And the other classes should be good as usual

Right ok so there is no GT2 equivalent, though will anyone enter anything faster than GT3 this year, or an entry list yet??

I thought Manthey just won a VLN race? Are they just not entering the 24hrs, even with a GT3 class Porsche??

what does it mean invitation class? the E1-XP class is reserved for those cars that run with "experimental" specs not suitable for a SP class. Bmw m3 was in that class and not in SP7 because in VLN/24H was running in GT-N specs (transaxle gear box). Is usefull to remember that manthey is still present, the team doesn't grid anymore their official cars (the yellow/green RSR and gt3r) but keep to back other porsche private teams.

Don't think cars faster than GT2/GT3 spec are allowed, safety considerations with 200 cars on a track like the Nordschleife...

Manthey will be there, but not as a full factory Porsche effort, the green and yellow monster with 4 factory drivers will not be there. They'll probably have 2 or 3 of them in the same car, but teamed up with gentleman drivers like Jochen Krumbach and the like.

It does mean "experimental", but it's also sort of invitational, as it's outside the regular SP-class framework.

Lets say it this way, unless Manthey miraculously enters SP7 with RSR I don't really care how they perform...
