Hopefully a TVR Griffith 500, but might be a WAMI Road Tracer the way fuel costs atm.
A New SS Ute would be beneficial to my lifestyle but $$$$ is (as always) the issue. |

Not sure. But the chances are it will be another Ford Escort since I've owned 4 now.
I've been looking at getting an older beater car to drive to work. I'm not too concerned about gas prices if I get something cheap. I only drive about 7 miles round trip work everyday. I've been thinking an AMC car or old 4x4 truck to be different. J.D. |

If someone would like to give me around £60k, my next car would be a Lexus LS600h. Almost certainly the best car in the world.

I spent all day yesterday loking at 4x4's for the wife. She needs to have a 4x4 for her work. Most of the miles she drives are on country lanes, and is out in all weathers, snow, gales and flood.
She currently has a Nissan X-Trail. It's a lovely motor, well finished off and it has all the kit imaginable. The downside is, it's not that rugged. Both front springs have broken in the last couple of months We have narrowed the choice of new vehicle to either a 'Rav4' or a 'Freelander', both on 04 plates. The question is, do we go for the Toyota, which like the Nissan, is beautifully finished and is fully loaded, or the Land Rover, which is fairly basic but rugged as hell. |

I really wouldn't describe the Freelander as rugged. All sorts of build and reliability issues and often unhelpful dealers (usually too busy doing warranty work on other Freelanders).
Toyota all the way, though if you've knackered the springs on an X-Trail you might want to look at something bigger than a Rav4. |

If you want rugged DON'T go for a Freelander especially if you are going second hand. There are certain issues with the K series engine and the transmissions on them have problems as well.
I don't know anything about the Toyotas but would suggest if you want something to do proper 4X4 stuff then don't go for a recreational 4X4, you want something along the lines of a Discovery, Range Rover, Shogun or Toyota Land Cruiser type car. |

Yep, I'd agree with that.
If you're looking at 2004 Rav4 I'm guessing the budget isn't unlimited... Isuzu Trooper diesel? Bit agricultural, but bombproof and cheap. |

I have heard about the reliability issues of the earlier Freelander's, and I certainly would not consider anything pre '03. I understand the reliability problems have been ironed out in the 2003 upgrade, plus we are looking at the diesel version.
I know of quite a few people around here who have had recent model Freelander's and are quite happy with them. Having said that I also know loads of people with Rav4's and are equally happy with them. I am planning on doing some market research this week to find out who is the most satisfied. 'Rugged', may not have been the best choice of words, but we were taken for a test drive in the Freelander, and we went to the dealers own off road course. I must say I was really impressed with what the Freelander could do and where it could go. I don't think any other vehicle in it's class would be able to make it around the course. Even some of the larger vehicles would struggle. In fact the dealership we went to has a BMW franchise, and one of their salesmen wrote off an X5 on the first obstacle. I understand what you are saying about the serious off roading stuff, but I have a Ford Maverick (Nissan Terano) for that. It is a great workhorse and out performs all my friends, Shogun's, Trouper's and Discovery's. It can't match a Defender though. What we are looking for is something smaller, a bit more economical and that can take on some major potholes, minor flooding and a few inches of snow, when it's called for. |

Rav4 fits the bill then I'd say.
Land rover have sorted the K series engine, but the Freelander is riddled with all kind of other faults. You could always be lucky and land a good one, but personally I'd far rather remove the risk and get a Toyota - you know a Toyota will be reliable. And their dealers are good. And if you're keeping the Terrano, it doesn't need to be able to tackle a Land Rover assault course... |

Only a Brit would consider an '04 Freelander over an '04 RAV4 |

It would be worth looking at a Suzuki too I think, they held onto a proper 4x4 setup longer than the others

I couldn't get Landrover to sell me a £40k car recently so I've written them off my list of companies to deal with, ever. |

It seems now an X-Trail has appeared in the mix. We have chance of a fully loaded, low mileage, '04 model, from the dealership where we got the current one. They have offered the best deal, and as my wife pounted out, she has had her car for three years, put almost 50k miles on it, and all it has needed, above and beyond the normal stuff (oil, filters, tyres, etc) is a couple of springs. |
