Car Numbers

What does everyone think of the 'small' numbers on the sides of the cars, as seen at the last 2 1000 Lakes, Rally GB last year and the Monte Carlo last week.

Are they being used for all rallies now?

The numbers are hard enough to read as the cars go by anyway. If you are a radio operator on an event, you need to be able to read the numbers so that you know who has and has not been past.

We are talking about the small black box with the yellow number in the middle, ive never had any problem reading it?

it depends on the amount of time you can see the number.

Where we were on one stage on the WRGB this year, the radio operator could not read the numbers. He has to sit back from the road and the exposure time combined with the number size meant that he had to get us to stand 50yds away and shout the car numbers to him.

A couple of months before he had been in the exact same spot and had no trouble doing an event using the old style numbers.

Mud or no mud, if you only get a very brief exposure, it is going to be very hard to read the numbers. Now was that a 5 or a 6???

Asinine.

NASCAR has the right idea, make 'em big and an integral part of the event. People associate number with driver and sponsor as well, you can actually tell the difference between the cars, everyone's a winner.

The annoying thing is that on many racing cars there are ginormous gaps where a large number could be placed without upsetting the almighty sponsor, but no-one takes advantage.
