A1gp 2006/07

Thinking a long was in ahead, but obviously preparations are in force for the next season of A1GP.
The BRSCC-SE website (who last year assisted in organising the event) has the Brands Hatch Round of A1GP to be held over August Bank Holiday weekend (26/27 August). Still provisional, but a safe enough bet. Starting quite a bit earlier than this season then (we can safely assume that Brands will be the opening round), hopefully this will mean extra rounds?
My concern is that it is "eating into" the actual motorsport season, and one of the big advantages of A1GP is that it's the off season sport. That's a busy weekend historically for motorsport in the UK anyway, although it'll certainly be a really good meeting and worth going to, will crowds and interest suffer?

The good thing is that Croft and Donington are both a fair distance from Brands Hatch and I think will draw a different crowd.

Well it is on the MSV calender so it seems fair to assume the race will go ahead.

The F3/GT package are supposed to be supporting A1GP this year... Part of the Palmer deal to get FPA on the F3/GT support package and have the F3/GT visit the main MSV "car ciruits" including the GP loop.

Presumably the F3/GT calendar will shuffle around to accomodate the A1GP date, if indeed it's as early as August.

yes, which is why the croft round won't go ahead on that date if a1gp is held.

Gerben24 has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
The Dutch media report that the management of Zandvoort are negotiating with A1GP to host a race. No deal has been made yet. Within 3 months a statement should be made. Because Zandvoort is only allowed to have a certain amount of racemeetings per year, it looks that the only available date will be 15th October 2006.

That would be a great race, especially given Jos's good result in Durban.

zandvoort would generate a fantastic crowd too, and the cars would be well worth watching around the track. imagine them all piling into the first corner

actually : exactly how many loud noise days are zandvoort allowed this year?

The racing and the crowd would be great, but Zandvoort is a seaside town on the North Sea coast, so in the middle of October I think I'll be watching from the sofa...

There seem to be quite a lot of negotiations going on for future seasons, I have read elsewhere that Canada is being discussed as well.

If they can ditch the rounds where the local promoter did not seem to care (Eurospeedway and Estoril, the latter disappointing considering Portugal does not have an F1 GP and their team is quite competitive), and replace them with some locations where we will get Brands/Durban type crowds, this series will go from strength to strength. Brno in the Czech Republic perhaps? And Zandvoort would be huge with all the Jos the Boss fanatics.

If it's to remain a "winter series" a Canadian round would have to be in either the first couple or last couple of races in "winter season".

Either that or have the snow plough nosecone fitted.

Isn't it completely irresponsible to put A1 GP on at Brands over August Bank Holiday, stomping all over some of the biggest events for many circuits across the country?

With so many potential dates, and a guarantee of a big crowd on any of them, why pick this date!!!!

Plus its only a couple of weeks after the GP Masters at Silverstone.

So much for being an off season series!!!!

Well the Sports market is a competitive one, and competition will intensify on holiday periods when consumers are up for grabs.

I do hope they do not compromise on the winter focus, it is great to have something to watch all year round.

Curious.Todays Autosport is suggesting that there will be only 10 rounds next season and it will be shortened to avoid clash with other events!

Indeed... and it looks as though while Brands Hatch will stay as the opener (presumably with a new date) Zandvoort will replace Estoril and Lausitz as the other European round (since Zandvoort is one of those circuits that is guaranteed a decent crowd).

Shame that Portugal did not get behind their team, but anyway, Zandvoort will be great. Better to stick to circuits where the crowd size and atmosphere are going to be good.

Good news - should mean a bigger crowd as the August BH weekend would end up being too busy motorsport wise; probably eating into the traditional motorsport season a bit less; and also much more chance I'll be there too!
