World Series

Why not bring back a World Sportscar Series, for the Le Mans Rules

As far as I understand it, the Panoz/ACO American/European/Asian etc. Le Mans Series can only call itself a 'world' championship if it gets itself governed by the FIA, and of course the FIA (this year) is running (or endorsing) its own GT and Sportscar series.

Of course, it would be much easier if Don Panoz and John Magoletsi sat down and agreed on a common set of rules and regs and initiated a single championship for both GT and sportscars. A single series would make it easier to fans to keep track of, gain extra media coverage thus bringing more finance into the sport and everyone is a winner.

This of course will never happen.

Yep, Guy Humpage, the ALM series would become an official worlds sportscar championship only if it is recogised by the FIA. And as they currenty have the FIA GT series, this is not going to happen. Sad, especially when the ALMS is arguably the better of the two.

nah, i reckon the FIA GT series is better, it attracts at least 32 cars per round, while the ALMS could only get 21 cars to Texas over 3 classes

But would the FIA GT get 32 if its race was in Texas? It's easy for European teams to get to FIA GT races in Europe...

Coincidentally, a thread on the totalmotorsport.com forums today mentions that the FIA are to sit down with the ACO and rewrite the rules for sportscar with a view to improving safety.

I must disagree. The ALMS can call itself a World Championship with out the blessing of the FIA. When did the FIA become the final arbitrator of everything motorsport? As the series is currentyl being raced in America, Europe and Asia, it already has met the requirement to be an international championship.

I do agree that both sides of the coin should reconcile and form a common set of rules that encourages the most participation of the current and future racing squads.

I'd like to see the Ferraris and Lister compete against the corvettes and saleens! I think a world series is a great idea! Teams like Ferrai and Lister and the bigger GT2 teams wouldn't have much problem getting around!
