Penske to Ford in '13

Quote:
Penske switching to Ford in 2013: UPDATE: Penske Racing will in 2013 switch from Dodge to Ford in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition, automotive-industry sources have informed Autoweek. An official announcement is expected midday Thursday. Penske fields Dodge Chargers for #2-Brad Keselowski and #22-A. J. Allmendinger. When Penske returned [too NASCAR] in 1991 he fielded Pontiacs through the 1994 season. He switched to Fords for the next eight seasons, 1995 through 2002, before forming his alliance with Dodge which reached nine years last season. All told, he's fielded 1,503 Cup entries, won 96 poles and 71 races. His cars have finished in the top-five 333 times and in the top-10 573 times. Penske Racing has never won a Cup championship but has been top-10 in final points 19 times. But Penske Racing has been in a mini slump of late. It has won at least one race every year since 1991 but has only 18 wins in 768 starts dating to 2004. The year before, Newman won eight races, more than half his NASCAR career total of 15. The Dodge years, beginning in 2003, are somewhat deceiving. Newman, in his second full year with Penske Racing, won eight races for Dodge in 2003, by far the brand's best NASCAR showing since its glory days with Richard Petty in the 1970s. Wallace won once in his next-to-last season of 2004, and Newman gave Dodge only three wins in his last four years with Penske. Kurt Busch won 10 times for Dodge in his six seasons with Penske Racing, and Keselowski has won three times.(AutoWeek)(3-1-2012)
UPDATE: Penske Racing is coming back to Ford. After a 10-year hiatus, Penske Racing returns its two-car NASCAR Sprint Cup operation to Ford Racing beginning with the 2013 Daytona 500, and if its latest term is anything like the most recent one, Ford fans will have plenty to cheer about. Penske Racing, recognized as one of racing's all-time great teams, most recently spent nine seasons with Ford from 1994-2002, posting 27 wins and 33 poles among three drivers. In addition, its teams finished in the Top 10 48.6 percent of the time (228-of-469 starts). The organization first raced with Ford in 1976 and 1977, before coming back in 1994. In total, through 524 NASCAR starts (509 Cup Series and 15 Nationwide Series) with Ford, Penske Racing teams earned 28 victories (27 Cup Series and one Nationwide Series) and 42 pole positions (36 Cup Series and six Nationwide Series). "This is an historic day for our racing program, and we are thrilled to see another member of the extended Ford family coming back," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas. "Working together with Penske Racing gives Ford another championship-level program, and we are excited to take our racing program to all-new levels." Added Roger Penske: "We look forward to joining the Ford Racing NASCAR program beginning in 2013. We appreciate the long-term commitment that Ford has made to Penske Racing and for their continued support of the sport."(Ford Racing)(3-1-2012)

Is this the end for Dodge in NASCAR?

What does this mean for other Ford backed teams like Richard Petty Motorsports?

Will they have to use Roush-Fenway engines or could we see a Penske version as well?

Saying it was time to “evaluate other options,” long-time NASCAR team owner Roger Penske announced Thursday that Penske Racing will switch from Dodge to Ford for the 2013 season.

Penske, now racing in the final year of his contract with Dodge, said the timing was appropriate to make a major change since all NASCAR manufacturers will be switching to new models for the 2013 season.

“This was a tough decision,” Penske said in a press conference Thursday afternoon. “We had discussions with Dodge. This wasn’t something that happened in the last 48 hours. It’s been over a few months.

“When we weighed the pluses and minuses of the opportunity, it was apparent to us that we need to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship. We’ve been trying to do it alone.”

Penske Racing currently is the only major Sprint Cup team associated with Dodge, and Penske said rejoining the Ford camp will give his group a benchmark to measure its level of success. The new deal also will link Penske and Roush Fenway Racing under the Ford umbrella, although it remains to be seen whether that relationship will foster cooperation, competition or a healthy mix of each.

Penske said he has not decided whether engines for his stock car racing operation will continue to be built in-house or bought from Roush-Yates Engines.

Penske has a partnership with Chevrolet in IndyCar racing, but he said that avenue is crowded on the Sprint Cup side.

“We thought it was time to evaluate other options,” he said. “With Chevrolet, we’d have a hard time getting in that line with the teams already associated with Chevrolet.”

Penske previously teamed with Ford in a partnership that produced 27 Sprint Cup victories. He continues to chase his first Cup championship, however.

Penske said his team remains committed to Dodge for this season with the idea of “winning races, making the Chase and winning the championship.”

Oddly enough, Dodge is scheduled to unveil its 2013 Sprint Cup car next week during the Las Vegas race weekend. The Penske shop did development work on the car but will not participate in the unveiling ceremony.

Penske’s departure leaves Dodge without a major team in NASCAR, and there was no indication Thursday as to what direction the manufacturer might take in pursuit of new partners. Dodge official Ralph Gilles said the group “will be evaluating the opportunities available moving forward.”

Jamie Allison, Ford Racing’s director, called Thursday “a historic day for Ford Racing. We are so delighted to have Roger and Penske Racing back in our NASCAR program. The addition of Penske Racing along with Roush Fenway Racing, Roush-Yates Engines and all our Ford teams really gives us great depth in NASCAR.”

Penske said the ability to compare his team’s products and efforts with other Ford teams was a key in the decision.

“This wasn’t about money,” he said. “I want to make that clear. The multiple-car teams have been the strength in NASCAR. We’ve been operating for the last 10 years with some support but alone. We needed to have a benchmark, and it will be good to have that additional technical information flow through the process.

“We can’t sit where we are. We’ve got to get better. This opportunity only comes at certain times. I think this was a watershed time for us to take a good look in the rear-view mirror and also out front.”

As for his team’s relationship with Roush Fenway Racing, Penske said, “Jack has been kicking my butt here for a number of years. I don’t expect him to stop. On the other hand, I think the association is maybe that 1 plus 1 equals 3. I think that’s what we have to do and fight it out on the race track.”

Actually, thinking about many of the new teams to Cup, there may be many more opportunities for Dodge to gain customers.

But just exactly who is going to run the 2013 Mopar? There are five Grandee teams- count 'em; Hendrick/SHR, Childress, Gibbs, Roush, Penske- and I can't see any of those suddenly swapping horses to run a Dodge. Of the second level teams- EGR,MWR,RPM- are any of them capable of stepping up to lead a manufacturer's effort? I think not....

EGR and RPM were both mentioned on the speed coverage over the weekend during qualifying and practice. Ganassi ran Dodges in the past. MWR is in too deep w/toyota to change.

a couple years ago I remember reading something along the lines of "as long as Dodge is in Cup, Penske will be a Dodge team", so I'm taking this to mean Dodge is out

My speculation, maybe they can sell their product to some of the newer upstarts/lower tier teams who want to perform at the next level (BK Racing, Front Row, etc)

Is bizarre, in an interview he was talking about usung Roush Fenway gear and tapping into that technology?

Surely Penske are the giants here? Seems Penske has been around many houses trying to get a winning combo, they have had many, but just not managed to win a championship, I wouldnt think they are that far away.

Shame for Dodge though, they are much needed and hope they stick around.

I somehow can't see Dodge wanting to run with a team that doesn't already develop all its own pieces.

I don't think that a liaison between Dodge and Furniture Row would suit either party. Furniture Row is a one-car team stuck out in the wilds of Colorado(!) far from the NASCAR heartlands of NC, which as I understand it enjoys a close client relationship with RCR, from whom it gets its chassis, and through Earnhardt Childress Engines, its motors. I can't see Furniture Row either wanting to or being able to break off this relationship to head up the NASCAR effort of a different manufacturer. The only way I could see Furniture Row running a Dodge would be if RCR themselves switched to Mopar.

Only teams I can see switching is Petty or MWR.

With Penske joining the blue oval I think Petty will become the #3 Ford team. This move means probably also less Ford money for Petty.

MWR because instead of being #2 Toyota team they can become the #1 team.

Unlikely I know, because they're only part-way through a multi-year contract with Chevrolet, but in many ways the team that could do best out of a deal with Dodge would be RCR. I know Richard Childress has a relationship with Chevrolet that goes back over some forty years, but the only reason he's even #2 in the pecking order behind Hendrick is that Joe Gibbs moved to Toyota. Prior to that , RCR was surely the third-ranked member of the bowtie brigade.

If RCR went to Mopar, they'd be the undisputed #1 team, and as such would have the access to preferential funding, technology, and equipment that that brings.

Andretti to Dodge and to Cup???

Quote:
Andretti to NASCAR...with Dodge?: Multiple sources have told FOXSports.com that one of the latest candidates for Dodge Motorsports could be Michael Andretti, owner of Andretti Autosport. With Roger Penske's departure from Dodge at the end of the 2012 season, the door is open for new organizations to enter the fold. In addition to Andretti, Richard Petty Motorsports and Furniture Row Racing are the top contenders to field Dodges in 2013. An announcement regarding Dodge's lineup, as well as its engine building plans, could come as early as the weekend of the NASCAR races at Michigan, June 15-17. Andretti currently fields three full-time teams in the IndyCar Series with drivers Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe. It is unlikely that Andretti would use open-wheel talent for a NASCAR venture. Two names mentioned as possibilities to drive for the team are Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch, both of whom have established relationships with Dodge.
