Dixie Flatline should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Take this with a grain of salt: Adrian Newey to leave McLaren at end '05?

F1racing.net are speculating that Adrian Newey is going to leave McLaren at the end of this year after it was reported in Autosport that his contract at McLaren has been extended by six months to finish at the end of the year. Sir Frank Williams apparently said when asked about negotiations with Newey: "He said he's going to find his life again". Newey himself has apparently said: "I want to have a better quality of life."

You never can tell, but I think the emphasis in the Autosport article may be right. He'll see out the year and then take a step back from designing F1 cars. Prpbably staying on at McLaren in some other, more general role.

However there have been mutterings of a return to Williams this year, but he seems to want to get away from that role.

Im sure if BMW dangle enough cash in front of Newey's nose his quality of life would suddenly take a turn for the better...

I wonder if Williams could provide him an environment to work in what would improve his quality of life at teh same time? I guess it depends on his gripes with his life quality...

Adrian would like to design yachts.....big, expensive ones that cost gazillions and are fueled by huge amounts of money. I don't think McLarens' offer could be any more appetizing than what a major boat racing syndicate could and would offer. I think he'll be gone, IMHO.

And I'd suggest the his quality of life in the yachting world might well be more, ahem, cruisey.

And a change is as good as a rest, they say.

McLaren's new contract with him is pretty much to ensure that if he's not designing F1 cars for them, he won't be for anyone else either.

McLaren have come as close as they are likely to come to confirm this story. F1racing.net is carrying another story this morning, saying that McLaren have confirmed that Newey has signed a new contract to take him to the end of '05, but refused to confirm whether Newey will take a sabbatical or retire from F1.

However, McLaren seem to be preparing for life after Newey, with Paddy Lowe being named new engineering director, and Newey in a less 'hands on' position.

Furthermore, it appears that McLaren and Newey have agreed a 'no compete' deal, whereby if Newey wants to return beyond 2006, he can only do so with McLaren.

Doesn't Newey pop out of wherever McLaren keep him and say something about his "quality of life" and then disappear again for another year or so?

I think AN has figured out that by doing this periodically, Ron will write him another, larger cheque...
