Do you have any more pictures of the the Friday shootout and the two 8 Clubs races from the saturday? I was racing a purple BMW mini, number 62 in all 3 races but im struggling to find any pics. I ran a seperate thread in National and club racing which unearthed a couple of images but would like to see some more if u have some,cheers

I have little knowledge of these single seaters, but I agree that 112 looks like a Van Diemen. All I can tell you is that it appears in the programme as a PRS RHO2 and that has not been corrected in the MST timings. I bow to your greater knowledge, guys! I suppose it couldn't be a PRS with a Van Diemen body?

There was an amendment to note it as a Van Diemen RF92.

While in pedantic mode, Matthew Dean's car is a Reynard 88FF. David Addison and I were having a discussion on Reynard type numbers on the Friday, particularly as the format is inconsistent between the FF1600 cars and what we think is correct for the FF2000s (e.g. Reynard SF79).

Rob Barff's car was a Mondiale M88S (not M885).

Nice to see nothings changed. It always seemed that on the odd occasion I had a decent result in racing, my name was spelt wrong in the programme, on the results sheet and if it got there the mags as well. Such is life!

I think a few more T644Es must be around somewhere. Looking at old programmes tends to indicate that there are, or were, at least several around.

The Lola T644E I believe was a development of the very successful T640. I don't think it sold as well as the Reynards and Van Diemans of the day, but still won quite a few races. I also think that it's possibly the last Formula Ford that Lola made.

A bit of mayhem here between Brooklands and Luffield. Pointing the right way is Michael Stewart (150 - Van Diemen RF86), and Chris Evans (114 - Swift FB90), facing the wrong way is Douglas Crosbie (153 - Van Diemen RF88) and, in two minds is Martin Pickles in his Van Diemen RF87; although not apparent here, he carried the number 67:-


The only front engined car was the Mallock Mk22 of Jeremy Bouckley. How many of these were made, or is it a 'one off' and when was it built?:-

I'm not sure of the build date Gary, and I guess one or two of the Merlyns may run you close (apart also from Mallock above); there are people better qualified here to comment than I, but if you don't get an answer from one of them, I'll start delving!:-

If my memory serves me correctly Andrew Gilbert Scott was favourite for the 81 festival in a T640 but changed to the new Reynard at the last minute.

Julian Bailey won the 1982 Festival in a T640, but only after being attacked by Maurizio Gugelmin (who ended upside down on top of the tyre wall). I have a video of it and Baileys suspension seems to bend as Gugelmin went over the top. It didn't seem to matter as Bailey carried on regardless!

There was a T642.

Gerrit van Kouwen won the 1984 Festival in a T644E. (I think the 'E' stood for European version)

The T640, T642 & T644E all look pretty much the same externally.

I was viewing from the bottom of Paddock Hill. It was wasn't a question of if it was going to happen but when!

Since both these replicated part 1 of their respective races in terms of grids, I don't propose to show any pics for the Group 1 race, due, as previously advised, to the minimal historic content, and the first 3places were as before.

In the Group 2 race, the battle was on again between Harry Vaulkhard's SEAT Leon Cupra R and Dom Evans E36 M3, again settled in the latter's favour. This time he had clear air, so it appeared that he had sorted his brake problems out. Again there was a good historic content in the rest of the field.

Here we see David Edward's Camaro again (11th), Graeme Smith's Caterham 7 (14th), Julian Gamage in Honda Accord (13th), David Hall's Lotus Cortina (18th) and Jaspn Newman, Peugeot 306 (15th)


Steve Smith's MGA was 8th and was passed by Rupert Wood's Widi who took 7th:-

The Lolas described came out in 1982-83-84 respectively for the T640/642/644s. I think Alan's right the 'E' was for a European car as opposed to the US version - different tyres I think.

They were never especially numerous, though all very quick, as shown by results. Don't know why they weren't more popular, perhaps the 'Reynard marketing machine' was in full flow by then, and VDs had many years of history and success behind them. Maybe they were more expensive?

The last year, 84, the main success was van Kouwen at the Festival, though Markie Blundell won the SoT in a T644E I think.

Jeremy Bouckley's Mallock Mk22 was the only one constructed to Formula Ford spec. A moment of note for that particular car was finishing second in the '79 and fourth in the '80 Castle Combe championships. During the 1980s the car was converted to Clubmans rules. As an aside, there have been a few Mallocks that have raced in Formula Ford, with a Mk6, in the hands of Richard Mallock being the first to retire from a Formula Ford race.
