New Minardi testdriver!

The Minardi-Asiatech team announced on Wednesday that Slovakian Jirko Malcharek will be the Faenza-based squad's test driver for the remainder of the 2002 season.
"Minardi is delighted to have signed Jirko to assist with its aerodynamic testing work," said team founder Gian Carlo Minardi. "He is fully dedicated to the role and impressed the team's engineers with his technical feedback at the recent Vairano test.

"An added bonus is that his height, weight and body proportions are similar to those of Mark Webber. We look forward to working with Jirko."

Minardi said the decision was taken following a successful test by the 35-year old driver at the Vairano track last week. Malcharek have also tested for the Minardi F3000 team this season, and has raced in the FIA GT Championship in 2002.

What!!!!!!!!
This is unbelieveble!!David Saelens was promised to become the test driver!!!He was talking about it during the Monaco GP,he sounded like he was sure of his position with minardi!!I don't even know this Jirko guy!!Once again money made the differance...I am so dissapointed...Does this mean that David's career is over???I mean his contract for the F3000 team ended right??

This is a bad day for Belgian motorsport...

bart_jacobs: indeed, his contract with the F3000 team ended and it's unclear whether the Minardi F3000 team will return to racing at all.

Malcharek, who is a member of the Slovak Parliament, got the deal following a successful test at the Vairano track last week. He was introduced to the Faenza-based squad by European F3000 Championship team, GP Racing.

obviously some money would have to have been brung to the team, which is good news, hopefully now it is enough for Minardi to stay Aussie owned and along with Webber finish the season and into the future.

Giancarlo Minardi has said that his job will mostly involve aerodynamic (read 'straight line'?) testing, and he was chosen as he is a similar height and build to Mark Webber. Effectively I don't think this guy is the main tester, just basically hired as a dummy Webber to save Webebr some of the more menial work.
