imull has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Gunk and the neighbours dishwasher shortly after

They did get totally stripped down and rebuilt after though as I was only getting the serious dirt off to start with.

Agree with Chris Y...

Definitely, err... "Carb Cleaner"

Mostly comes in a convenient aerosol can. A good spray over, leave to sink in for a few minutes, then spray off with the very same can! What will they think of next

Sorry topwelshman, its just toooo hard to resist sometimes

Didn't have any Carb cleaner at Halfords this morning so got Alloy wheel cleaner and it's doing the job!

Aha... if you're shopping at Halfords I guess you should have asked for "Throttle Body Cleaner"! Then they might have know what you were talking about

Alloy wheel cleaner is an acid, it descales the surface but will make it go a dull white. Carb Cleaner is good, an ultrasonic cleaner is the best.

Try and keep your fingers out while the thing is operating - not good for the fingers!

Do they still make "INHIBISOL" - good stuff in an Ultra Sonic Cleaner

I sometimes use paint stripper (Nitromoors) to bring up alloy castings, just cleaned up an inlet manifold for the historic Camaro I am putting together and it came up great.

use paint thinners, cleans the crud off nicely from ali, although it wont remove any oxidation

If you've actually got the manifold / carbs off then an overnight steep in a parts washer or bucket of Sealey Engine Degreaser (or might just be called "Cleaner" - its the stuff that comes in a 25 litre drum form the likes of "Machine Mart") is worth the effort. It not only takes off the grime, but any laquer and carbon too. I did a whole cylinder head and it came up like new - cleaned the carbon off the chambers and everything!
