Race of the year 2004 (awards)

10 Tenths Awards 2004

Best Race of 2004

The votes are in and they have been counted. The winner is

Belgium, Spa-Franchorchamps

Runners up
2nd: Monaco, Monte Carlo
3rd: Interlagos, Brazil

The race that saw Kimi Raikkonen's only win of the year, Montoya's superb pass on Michael Schumacher and Schumacher clinch his seventh title sealed the prestigious 10 Tenths award. It was a great race with changing conditions and at the best circuit in the world. Ah, heaven...

Despite other overtaking fests at Hockenhiem, Bahrain, Monza and Brazil Spa came out on top. The glamour and sheer challenge of 900+bhp around the streets of Monaco saw this race clinch second ahead of the season final in Brazil.

Hungary and Spain battled it out for the bottom of the table. Hungary, surprisingly winning on count back due to the six points awarded by dcp2685!

It is interesting to note that the top four races are races that Michael Schumacher didn't triumph (out of only five he didn't win)! However they were at good circuits with plenty of action.

The results are the combined effort of 10 Tenths voters who awarded points to the top eight races. The F1 points system was used to rank the races. Below is a summary of the full results. A 'win' is a 1st place vote by a member (etc...) and a DSQs are double (uncounted) votes by a user.
Code:

Very interesting, as you say, that the races which topped the poll are the ones Schumacher didn't win.

That, in itself, is not what made it exciting - but it shows people generally prefer unpredictability.

KB most of Schu's wins were dead boring with him leading almost from start to finish... and the times he didnt lead at the start was because he was running heavier.. i think that is why none of them topped the list.
is Schu won at Spa by passing Kimi in the end id still have voted for SPA as the best race...

Generally I think the result is not that surprising from the views that are around here. Britain and Australia may have done slightly better because it became many who actually went to the event's favourite.

It is also interesting that the better circuits rank highly. I guess we have taste. Also, despite the proliferation of racing there, Hockenhiem is mid-table.

Thanks to everyone who voted

I suspect that it was ironic voting. Although perhaps some went there, in which case it could well have still been an enjoyable weekend.

What's the FIA column - and the 1, 2, 4 on the far right of the table?

It is the order of the races. That column will come more into its own on the teams and driver results when it will be the real championships finishing order.

I tell you why I was confused - the races with long names (Australia, San Marino and Malaysia) don't fit in the first column on my screen, so they have tabbed everything next to them one column along to the right, meaning the 1, 2 and 4 stick out into an extra column.

I won't dispute the order... at least the first placed race. However I'm worried about what the fans actually want. Monaco, second placed one, was extremely boring, even for me - a fan of Monaco GP; except a couple safety car periods and a surprise winner. Sorry, but that's not racing. What's worrying me more, is that FIA knows that, but pushes in this direction nevertheless with whatever rules they invent. And the audience applauds them.

Just noticed that it does the same for me at work, so I have editted it.

Isn't it great? The race I have near me - the only one I can go to without shelling out much dosh - is voted the most boring one...

Worst even, it really was!

How was Hungary beaten as worst race?

Lock me in a room with a video player, a TV and a tape containing the Hungarian GP and Spanish GP then I'd fast forward to Spain every time.

As bad as it was.

Disagree.

It was a fabulous race. It had action, incident and an exciting dash to the flag.

Sort off, most of the races are entertaining as they are, just the camera watches that red car with the number 1.

The Spanish race is mostly a long with Hungary the most unentertaning race.

I voted for Australia as the winner, only because I went with my wife, and we had a blast on turn 3 without the benefit of a super-screen in front of us, so we only had an inkling that Michael was dominating. Then my wife got into the pits after the race and rubbed shoulders with plenty of drivers. Heavenly!

I agree!

That was the most interesting Monaco GP I can remember.

I thought the USGP would do better then 9th place. Plenty of action, and incidents, and the rare sight of Rubino actually challenging Michael for the win, was memorable!
