Very true Pete. Look at the photo in this weeks autosport of Martin Stretton's crash. He's just hit the tyres and already the team is on the move. Dancooke gets there first to look after the driver ( although he admitted he should have a bottle too) and the rest are close behind. Result, fire out, driver out (after a little cutting) and another team effort successfully completed.

On the matter of signing the new cards. As long as you have been appointed Post Chief on the day (although you may not be graded as one) you may sign the cards. I had this clarified by the MSA a few months' ago.
The new cards should be being accepted by all clubs now and the comments and final assessment should be done. It is still possible to use any old cards until the end of the year if you wish, but it was agreed at The Chief Marshal's Meeting at the start of the year that the new cards would be used and you can attach the old cards to the new cards and continue collecting your signatures on the new cards and then when you have enough send both in together. For some reason (I know not why), some clubs have not yet started sending out the new cards and are still sending out the old cards. In theory this could cause problems next year when everyone should be using the new cards, so as we are near the end of the season the new cards should start to be issued. However, I suspect in practice that both old and new cards will continue to be used next year, but we will see. You can use the new cards to record all your meetings if you wish and get a further card when you have filled it up. Alternatively to retain your grade you only need 5 signatures (I think, I am going by memory at the moment) during the year. This year has been a trial year and a lot of points have been thrown up. As stated above I suspect a revised booklet listing all the corrections will be issued in due course. |

I have not collected any signatures of any kind this season on any cards.
Does that (A) make me a bad person or (B) mean I could lose my grade? |

If I lost my XO grade - I couldn't say I'd be too devastated as I'd still turn up and do the job I've been doing for the past 5-6 years.
As Harry says earlier on, it's all about team-work and no one person on post is better than the next. |

Yes that's true. Without each other we'd all be screwed. Some people may be more competent. But none are better.

Identifying inexperienced trainees
Just as a relevant aside, I was lucky enough to take my fiancee to Brands this weekend and she loved it and is already checking the diary / changing her shifts to accomodate what few events remain this year.
However, her comment was that she was "scared witless" when drivers assumed she was 'competent' because she was wearing orange. She said there should be a clear identifying mark for trainees to wear to enable drivers etc to recognise that she hasn't got the experience that others may have. This would make it clearly known that she may not be able to respond in the timescale that is desired by the person making the query. She suggested that a badge be developed which is clearly identifiable (maybe the Yellow box with a black cross in it). That way, when she's asked to remove a pin from an on-board fire extinguisher, the driver would know that she may not have a clue what he's talking about or how to do it. Her reply to the driver this weekend was "I don't know how to do it, but I know a man who does". Fortunately, this time, the driver was very patient and, to use her words, "nice and kind" and said thank you to her for sorting it out for him. Would welcome anybody's comments on this idea. Tel |

As a trainee she should have shadowed a more experience marshal. as far as removing a pin from an in car extingusher, thats down to the driver to sort out before coming out on track, the driver should have know better. My wife is also a trainee and if an incident happens she will wait for the experienced bods to take the lead, then assuming the drivers gets out alone she will point him in the right direction until she if confident enough to go track side in an incident. As far as having a badge to show she is a trainee, good idea but some of the drivers don`t know what the flags mean...a badge would just confuse them even more...... |

Personally, I always felt that the trainee badge was a protection against my being asked to do something beyond my experience - an indication of my lack of experience, not any lack of ability. While there are many people who would be happy to wear such a badge, there are many who would not. Just remember: none of us knows everything about marshalling - we're all (I hope) still learning. |

I usually find that my black badge indicates to others that I am not capable of attending incidents/jumping over barriers/pushing cars!

I have one hell of an image in my head now.
