Worth noting that Audi's victory at Austin was their 100th LMP overall victory apparently. Well done to them.
100 LMP overall victories since their first victory at Sebring on March 18th, 2000. That is quite an achievement. |

I don't see him in an Audi LMP next year - they have 3 good teams now, why chance in it.
However he could be interesting when Tom K and Allan McNish retires. |

According to http://www.benoittreluyer.com/bt/en/...e-in-the-west/ Treluyer offered to double stint the tyres as a guinea pig for the sister Audi.

Cool to see the list, thanks!
You can also clearly see the three years where they had some real competition. |

Wow, that is an incredible list of accomplishments! It doesn't seem that long ago that some of those wins happened.
Neat to see it all written out, LMP1. |

Competition from another factory diesel . Audi have been around for quite some time. About 15 years now for the top class? 2009 was not their year at all, but every other year theyve won either LeMans or the majority of the races.

An interesting Shakedown video where we get some info about Audi's future motorsport plans. Video includes a short interview of McNish as well as some info gathered by Leo Parente as a result of a one-hour discussion with Dr. Baretzky.
- confirmed: no DP by Audi ("never" according to Dr. Baretzky) - Indycar plans: "maybe if they get the rules right" - F1: no way considering the current "inflexible" rules - the next "R18" will be even more car relevant (will we see the "air hybrid system" be raced next year ?) and... Baretzky: "Audi will always race" |

Sounds good.
But let's remember Peugeot also still races - the question is never "will they race or not", it's more "on what plan will they race" |

Thats like saying Ford or Chevy will always race... in Nascar. Audi will always be around in DTM or GT if not in lmp.

DTM is surely important in Germany, but I honestly doubt that this is the best platform to showcase Audi's technology. DTM is basically a "closed spec" formula which does not offer any freedom to try new technology on the track. You may further wonder in which respect DTM is "road car relevant". While the "road car relevance" argument has some limits, the current LMP regulation at least constitutes the best opportunity for Audi to showcase their technology. As long as the LMP rules provide such freedom (and the 2014-rules increase this freedom even more), you can bet that Audi will still be around running a LMP1 programme. |

I read it more as Audi will only race where the regulations allow them to dominate.

If DTM move towards SuperGT's 2 liter turbo 4's with hybrid power, that is production car relevant. More so than a flywheel hybrid system on a diesel since they currently sell 0 hybrid diesels.

But that would once again amount to a spec engine with no or barely any technical freedom. As of today, LMP is the only place where Audi can track test new technology in race conditions, such as the compressed air system that would be even more car relevant than any hybrid system that requires costly energy storage systems (whether it be flywheel, supercapacitor or batteries).

Who said its spec? If they even move to combine the two types of cars there should be more freedom in the engine/hybrid area. That's the road car relation. Audi isn't big on hybrid anyway so diesel is probably where they'll market themselves and stay in competition. At least for the time being.

In any event, my point is that the current LMP regulations are the ideal platform to allow Audi to test innovations and showcase their technology. They have more or less total freedom on the engine and hybrid side, at least far more than under the DTM/Super GT rules (or F1 rules... or Indycar rules... pick your choice). As long as this stays like that - and putting politics aside - there is objectively no reason for Audi to leave the LMP arena. |
