Bathurst 2006

Good to see a couple of bright orange Poms working at Flag Points around Bathurst this year. I think Paul? and Ashley? thoroughly enjoyed the experience...especially being moved around to different points over the course of the four days.

They encountered the usual pommie bashing but took it like Aussies in good humour and sometimes gave it right back to us

I said:

Ohhhh, forgot to warn you about the large bright light in the sky.....its called the sun!!

They said:

Yeah....the only Sun we get is the Sun Newspaper (boom boom)

apologies for not mentioning any other Marshals from other countries (I think there was one from Scandinavia)

Bright orange refers, I assume, to their probans, although I know what that Aussie sun can do to your face...

Yes, the POMs that you refered to were Paul and Ash. I hope you gave Paul some stick for drinking those girlie alco pop drinks They are staying over in Oz to do the Champ cars & V8 Surfers paradise meeting later this month.

You'll have at least one other pom in orange next year as I'm coming over for the great race and surfers as well. Hope to be accompanied by a South African who is living in NZ (wearing orange of course )

Goodies for Surfers are pretty good too - shirts, hat, poster (looking at it now) and various other bits and pieces. Sandwiches (keeping them cool can be a problem) and a dodgy breakfast roll from McDonalds. Lots of water and ice provided during the day.

Plenty of down time between races, during which you'll want a long lens and a view upwards...

How are you getting to the track? Depending on where you're coming from, buses didn't seem to start up until after sign on but were useful for the return journey. Parking is limited and not necessarily close to sign on, plus if you're coming from the South you've got to fight through the traffic jams on the way back.

You may have covered all of this, but if you want any more info, PM me with your e-mail address and a list of questions. Have lots of fun, they do look after you well. And a bunch of names in case anyone says 'we had a Pom with us last year':

Wendy and John, Darren, Ron, Barb, Josh, Mario. Say hi, if you meet any of them.

How does one volunteer for Bathhurst?
I am licenced by CAMS.
Hoping to go to Australia in 2007 to see my mate..............how far is it from Sydney?

Would the organisers let me flag? The GP people wouldn't - they insisted I did incident despite me telling them it has been 9 years since I last did it!

Just been reading though - in another Forum on here - that you have lots of trouble with spectators at this event.
Reports of drunkedness, harrassment etc!

Doesn't sound like somewhere I would like to bring my wife and 2 kids TBH

Well I would!! its just like me saying I would never go to an English football match because of the hooligans....this behaviour is confined to a few areas (but can obviously erupt anywhere given the right circumstances). If you are coming over to marshal.....you camp in a dedicated area thats relatively safe...or you could also get some accomodation away from the track.

[Off Topic warning]

The F1GP is an interesting event when it comes to choosing who does what.

Ignoring the medical, fire & comm's side of things when it comes to those in White overalls there are 3 basic trackside marshals;

Spectator Marshals - Usually people with limited trackside experience who only work in the "moat" (between the spectator & catch fences) and ensure silly people in kilts don't run onto the track.

Track Marshals - What I belive you call "incident", basically the hands and feet who clean up the mess and assist the specialists (fire & medical) as required.

Flag Marshals - Kind of obvious, many flag marshals at normal events are trackies or speccies at the AGP and as vacancies appear in the flag list they call on the pool of other officials to fill the gaps.

[/Off Topic warning]

I did not spin (and block the hairpin) after posting the fastest lap with 1 minute of the session left on purpose.
