While I think it is terrific news that they are talking, I do have some concern over the new formulae idea.
As we all know Champ Car is getting an all new chassis next season. If a new unified series is going to start fresh again what happens to the new for '07 cars? What potential new team is going to commit to purchasing a '07 panoz if there is the risk of it becoming obsolete? Personally I think they should fastrack the merger idea and get it implemented for '07. Use the new Champ Car chassis specs for a unified series, it would be new to teams from both series. Or at least have the IRL teams adapt the same specs for '07 in the hopes of a future merger. I fear these talks could really derail Champ Car's growth. |

Well said enemy ace. The chasis would be new to both series. And, why not work out a way to bring in both engines - Honda and Ford with Cosworth. Honda does know what a turbo is afterall. Fast forward to 2007.

Although it may look good for a merger, it may already be too late for 2007. It may be 2008 before it actually happens.
If that were the case would ChampCar bother with the 07 car, given that they would need another in 08? |

It's gonna happen. IRL's car-count, TV numbers, and bank balance is running low. Champ Car isn't much better. Merge or perish; it's that simple.

I don't normally like getting involved in merger threads (I am a natural pessemist, plus they always end up in sectarian slagging matches), but the indycar website itself has an article on it's front page - would they do that if the talks weren't serious?
http://www.indycar.com/news/story.php?story_id=6173 (mods: is there any way of linking the indycar & ccws forum threads on this?) |

Penske has a point. Everyone who has talked to george for 15 years has been talking to a brick wall. No reason why this time would be any different.

Penske's read is important, of course, but this time around instead of people talking to TG, TG is an active participant. He's gone from having the attitude that someone should sell him on the concept, to having the attitude that the concept is strong but the execution must be right. That's a step forward for the OW world, IMO.

I like very much what SB, PT and Vasser had to say about this issue - and I see their speaking on the matter the way they did as true sportsmanship becoming for the good of the sport. Just thought I'd throw this in - I think that was true class and guts, and I'm more proud now than ever to have watched them race in the races I've seen them race in.

At least the team owners want unification, and now we are at the point where the series owners want it as well. At least both sides are talking and are on the same wavelength.

Its good that we have continued discussion from Champ Car about a merger but I would much rather this weekend they focused on the rcing and what they need to do. This race is one of their biggest races!

Amen, Luke, we agree on one!
Long Beach is CC's premier race, not a bully pulpit for merger talk. From past practice, IMO, TG won't let Indy become that. |
