McNish to Ferrari
Allegedly as their second tester to replace Massa instead of Burti - its in Autosport as an allegedly so it must be true - which goes back to my original theory that he sacked Renault and not vice versa - good luck to the lad

I hope you're wrong too, but I suspect you're not.
As for the story, Ferrari could do a great deal worse than hiring McNish........ to replace TGF....... |

I've amended the title slightly to reflect that it's still a rumoured possibility, not a definate.
I'm sure Ferrari would benefit from Allan's experience with Renault, their systems and importantly Michelin, as no doubt they view Renault as an increasingly strong rival. ST |

Massa is supposed to be the latest hottest talent from Ferrari. Why the heck would they want to replace him with McNish?

I am not sure that from McNish's point of view its all that wise a move, he is not likely to ever race for them and they have Badoer as number 1 tester and he will never race for them either.

Allan's race seat opportunities are limited, his 'best' option is a Jordan, which it's fair to say is not a very inviting prospect.
If it's a case of not racing for anybody next year, or even a difficult year for Jordan, and testing for Ferrari, I know what I would rather have on my CV ! |

Well, it would give Alan a chance to show his true potential in a Championship Winning car. So it may enhance his prospects a bit.

Considering his age shouldn't he really be racing rather than testing? He can't have many years left and wouldn't it be better for him if he raced in say the IRL where he could challenge for the title than test a Ferrari, knowing he is never going to race one of them??

McNish will have an interesting career at Ferrari if he does indeed end up there... the weird bit was that despite all teh chat, Mika Salo when sharing the Toyota nightmare with McNish, reckoned he was too indecisive and wouldnt develop a direction to head until he had conferred with every man and his dog...
... suggesting a methodical approach if slow... I didnt think Ferrari rated Burti a lot as a tester either? |

The rumoured role at Ferrari is as test driver, not racer. In this respect Allan is eminently qualified. I'm sure Bridgestone would love to put a driver in a car who has extensive experience of Michelin tyres, the effectiveness of which, undoubtedly provided the scare of the summer for Ferrari. I can well imagine that Ferrari are a bit worried about Renault. Their improvement curve has spiked upwards quicker than anyone else's. They appear to have a slightly different way of going about things, http://www.f1racing.net/news.php?ID=64541,
and no doubt they would like to pick his brains as much as he'd like a test drive. When Felipe moves up to the senior team, Alan can have his spot at Sauber. Maybe they'd make him the 3rd driver for the reds too. All in all, a better move for him. With Flav controlling the drivers at Renault, his future there was limited. |

For example, after Burti quit Ferrari, the rosse had a lack of improvement (ok, there is many a reason for that, but he they were); after Burti returned to Ferrari, they started improving again. And everybody can agree that Burti will not obscure Senna's myth as a race driver; nevertheless he seems to have been very useful as a test driver. Last edited by climb; 20 Oct 2003 at 12:35. |
