Finishes in timed races

Hi, everyone! I have a question about the rules of race finishes in timed races like the 24h of Le Mans and Nürburgring. Once the scheduled time has elapsed, when do cars begin to get the checkers and register the total time and laps? Is it after the overall leader crosses the finish line, after the class leader crosses the line, or just the first time any car crosses the line? Thanks!

Any race ends after the lead car crosses the line the first time after elapsed time is up. Any car crossing the line after that, has ended their race.

stuart thompson should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
On a similar subject I have always wondered say a car is leading le mans, it is a good few laps in the lead and runs out of fuel or breaks down it is far enough in the lead to not be caught before time elapses so who gets the win?

It has to be running at the end of the 24 hours. If it's not, even if it's already covered more distance, the next highest runner will win.

That's why the Alpha Racing Team Porsche got classified 3rd in 1990 with 352 laps behind two Jags; the Brun Porsche completed 353 laps but blew up with 15 minutes to go.

For Le Mans I think I car has to do at least a 6 minute final lap to be classified.

I think they all have a rule like that. It's so that you can declare a winner 6 minutes after the clock expires and you couldn't end up with the hypothetical situation where a leading car stops on the last lap and its team refuse to withdraw it, which could theoretically end in a very messy situation afterwards if you have to wait an extra half an hour for the second place car to overtake it. That and the old "sit just before the finish line and refire the car" trick.

From what I know pretty much everywhere except Le Mans 24h a car will be classified even if it doesn't finish as long ir completes a certain % of the distance covered by the leader (in most cases 70%).

This may vary from series to series, at least it did in the past. I've definitely heard of races where the first car to cross the line after the time runs out is the one that is shown the checkered flag first.

Are you really comparing the Birkett with World Sports Cars. Wow.
I love both, but they ain't exactly at the same level. I've never been as cold as at a Birkett...

Meanwhile, I was referring to FIA type races. Yes, there are other rules in force, and historically, but I suspect the original question was WEC related.

You may well be right, although that wasn't explicitly specified. And anyway, the subject of the thread is "finishes in timed races", so entirely relevant to the evolving discussion.
