Tyres Big Issue at Thruxton
Famous for its hard wearing surface coupled with is fast heavy loading corners thruxton will quite frankly be a killer on tyres
Myself and redshoes were chatting b4 the thruxton test, saying that we thought the production cars may well have to make a pit stop as they were quite worn at brands. Dont know how many laps the feature is, but we were quite worried at thruxton as even the BTCT guys were struggling, just ask steve soper and yvan muller who both had incidents BF Goodrich were apparently using the hardest tyre they had for those tests and look what happened!! All i wish is that i could speak french because i know the BFGoodrich technician was swearing when he examined mullers shredded tyre in the vauxhall pit right in front of us. Well it will certainly make for interesting moments and possibly a few interesting crashes - just hope nobody gets hurt because that would be the last thing the series would need!!!! |

yeah they resurfaced for start of last season so they flattened a few bumps and made it even faster, and the surface they put down well its fairly smooth but because of the heavy loads it still a high tyre wearer just ask the formula renault boys last year they had to have two short races as the tyres would not last

Vincent Apple tested the tyres for the Formula Renaults. He said they performed OK, so why should the tourers have problems? Surely the same compound could be used on theirs?

Les, you can't compere a formula renault to a touring car. They are totally different weights, speed, drivetrain etc. The rubber for a touring car is specific for that use. However it wasn't much good a thruxton last week.

Didn't the Production (aka 'Class B') cars have to pit at last year's Thruxton race?

I think feature race is 32 laps!!
The smart production driver will be preserving his tyres so as not to pit!! Kelvin |

Both the Barwell cars stopped last year. Remember that the Production cars don't have those single quick-release wheelnuts so pit stops are hardly quick.
No disrespect to Vincent but his driving style is hardly the same as Muller's. |

Good call here. We had not one but two compulsary tyre stops in the feature race due concerns over the rubber.

The Pugs are really complaining about the tyres but surely they had the same as the Astras?
Also the production cars didn't pit stop - are their tyres different in compound as well as size - does anyone know? |
