Fastest laps from Road America

http://www.champweb.net/headline.php?t=h&id=26198

While the race result was a bit unexpected, due to the unusual pitting strategies and on-track incidents, one should take a look at the fastest laps to find a more accurate indicator of car and driver performance. Bruno Junqueira set the fastest lap of the race at 1:45.504, but his teammate Sebastien Bourdais managed only the 6th fastest lap at 1:46.281. Jimmy Vasser in the improving PKV Racing car set the 2nd fastest lap just a tick slower than Junqueira, but he finished 8th. The winner, Alex Tagliani, was reasonably paced, being 5th fastest at 1:46.195. The surprise second-placed car of Rodolfo Lavin was only 13th fastest, with a lap of 1:47.010 set on Lap 38. As for the sportscar ace Guy Smith's first race in the Champ Car World Series, he was the slowest car during the race, almost 3 seconds off Junqueira's pace, but nonetheless it was not a disgrace considering he was running without the benefit of any recent Champ Car experience. However, Smith will no doubt have to prove himself quickly if he does not want to be axed like his predecessors in the #17 Rocketsports car.

Interesting that Jimmy was up there #2. I don't necessarly agree that fast lap indicates who should have won or atleast finished well. If we'd had a boring F1 style race Bourdais would have won. That wouldn't have been just.
