Here's another way of looking at it. From the moment it first turned a wheel, it was obvious that the 2014 RBR was not a title contender irrespective of who was behind the wheel. Given that, it doesn't really matter what Seb does or who finishes ahead of him. Or put another way... it's the best year to have all the bad luck !

I suspect that there will be more frustrations yet this season for Vettel.

Or he pulls a JV and completely falls off the planet after early success.

Does that really matter anymore? It's clear that it was never a conspiracy since the problem car this year is so called wonder boy's. But looking at how Lewis Hamilton has devolved, it made me realize that Vettel has always been incredibly humble. Why should he have any reason to pity Webber during that past seasons? It's not like he builds the cars.

iirc Vettel actually experienced more terminal failures while leading than Webber and almost as many general failures. People and media seemed to notice and/or remember Webber's issues far more for some reason.
It just seems very unlikely that a team would intentionally sabotage one of their drivers. (granted Massa's gearbox may suggest otherwise) |

As a matter of fact they are. They were also aware of Webber's plans several years in advance of 2014 which is why they put a lot of effort into sabotaging his races... but continually renewing his contract at season end. In case you didn't know, RBR's main raison d'etre is winding up F1 drivers... and it's alleged that Webber was well and truly done for by the end of it all. Apparently, RBR have now shifted all their focus to Vettel this year... but plans are in the works for Ricciardo to receive the treatment as early as 2015.

I think you will find whilst Vettel actually had more mechanical DNFs than Webber in their career together, I think you will find Webber had far more issues in races that hurt his pace or put him back with penalties (Gearbox changes etc) I dont think that was intentional, rather a result of the team trying to give Webber equal chance of winning as I did read aspects of hsi car were different, tighter packages due to his size and weight difference to Vettel |

It's not about who had "terminal failures" in assessing such questions. It's about how had the the bulk of the resources, the bulk of the development, who's car was finely honed to the nth degree and who's wasn't and so on. In the modern era, that's how subtle we need to go to judge questions of this sort.
My view is that they where given equal cars, Vettel gained the ascendancy so over time the bulk of the development work went in his direction, over the off season the car was calibrated with a little more with Vettel in mind because he was the leading horse. It likely leads to Webber having had a car towards the end that probably downplayed his talent - even if only by a slight degree. Coulthard at McLaren was probably similar. That's my sense of things anyway and I think that's way all teams operate; it's a sport that's time intensive when it comes to development and with limited time to work on development, you gravitate towards your top man. I would also add that there can be power struggles within teams. Red Bull had certain factions there and the politics was a bit tug of war. No question of "sabotage" but as a subtle thing that can favour one driver over another, I do think that's something we need to consider. |

who cares about Webber, he is so last year, this is about a rookie schooling a 4 time world champ (early days, but we'll still claim it) onya Ricciardo!
