Barbagello Raceway - visiting UK marshal
G'day. I'm going to be in Western Australia at the end of October prior to attending a wedding in Perth on 1st November. I see on the Barbagallo Raceway calendar that there is a 2 day meeting on 25 & 26 October. Do any of the Australian readers have the contact details of the chief marshal for this meeting?
Any other advice for marshalling at Barbagallo Raceway will be gratefully received. Thanks |

Looks like it's a WASCC meeting - try wascc@wascc.asn.au
Or more info might be available from these folks at WFMA. |

I know Poole is a long way from most circuits but you are taking things to the extreme! How's it going, mate? Tried e-mailing you the other day but it bounced back. May have to do something radical like joining Facebook!

Mate don't get too excited about it. Even if you go there with very low expectations, you might well be disappointed. I've given up going to the track, it's just not worth the hike out there anymore, even if the gate entry is free.

Well, I still haven't received a reply from Australia. Any Aussie marshals out there who can help with contact details?

I just noticed this thread.
W.A. = Wait Awhile Being a local I may be able to help so...... Lets get Easter out the way & I'll see whom I can direct you to. Could probably give you a job on a spanner with the open wheelers which may interest you? We'll have 2 early wings & slicks cars there. |

Hi Mike. I contacted Danielle at WFMA and she was really helpful and friendly (of course!). And Barbagallo is a nice little circuit - nothing like we have here but the sun shines!

Had a nice email from Rick at WFMA asking for the address of my friends house in Perth so that he could not only drop off my tickets and details for the 25th and 26th October meeting but also a cap and a polo shirt. Also got my car hire sorted for my stay in Western Australia, a Holden SV6! How long before i get a speeding fine?

Well i'm back in the UK from my travels to Hong Kong and Australia and thought i'd update 10/10ths with information about Barbagallo Raceway.
On arriving at my friends house in Perth I found that Rick (from the Wanneroo Flag Marshals Association - WFMA) had left a package for me containing a white long sleeved WFMA polo shirt, a WFMA cap, a WASCC (Western Australia Sports Car Club) key ring, WASCC lanyard and a Barbagallo circuit season pass for me along with detailed instructions on how to get to the circuit and the location of sign on. Car parking is loacted just outside the paddock gate where it is a 1 minute walk to sign on. WFMA have a double garage in which you sign on and have the morning briefing. Free tea, coffee, bottles of water and soft drinks are available at sign on (and are kept in a large fridge so they are nice and cold) A packed lunch is supplied (Large sandwich / wrap, crisps, two small chocolate bars (eat them quick!) fruit, cheese and biscuits and a small cake) and is more than adequate. You can also buy burgers, bacon rolls and sandwichs at one of the two hot food outlets as well. As indicated by the title the WFMA supply the flag marshals for the circuit. Fire Tenders and recovery are organised by the circuit / WASCC. There is a total of 11 flag points around the circuit. A large minibus takes marshals to their posts (posts 1, 2, 10 & 11 walk) and back at lunch time, repeating the process for the afternoon. Most posts are singly manned and you are in contact with race control via radio. Posts are raised above track level and have good visibility between them. Each post has a light board which is controlled via a small hand held controller (play staion controller size) Flags, radios, SC boards and light box controllers are collected / returned to the WFMA garages each day. Fire bottles are permanantly in location at each flag point. I did do a good check for Red back spiders on the post each day and as it was snake season i watched where I was walking through the grass! You swap posts at lunch time so for my first day i manned post 6 in the morning and post 10 in the afternoon. This is normal for the flag marshals at Barbagallo. At the end of the day a free barbecue was provided by the WASCC as was two bottles of beer (I only had one each day which I was glad of on the Saturday night as I was stopped on the way back to the house as part of a random breath testing operation by the local police! I did pass of course) I was also given a meeting cap as well. After the BBQ on the Saturday I was told that the local modifed car series had a track evening and that free fast passenger laps were available for the marshals. Flag posts were not manned for the track evening. I was one of the first out in a 5 litre Holden Commodore. Sideways at night under floodlights on a damp track was interesting to say the least! At the end of the meeting (a 2 day International historic meeting) I went to purchase a WASCC shirt from the circuit office. When the lady from the WASCC found out I was a visiting UK marshal she also gave me (free of charge) a circuit cap as well. Every Australian and expat marshal made me feel very welcome at the circuit and I have been invited to return for next seasons V8 Supercar meeting. Sadly the lack of finances will not allow me to do this. I took 10 BMMC patches to hand out to the marshals for which I was thanked. A little gift in return for the amount of hospitality I received. Would I return to marshal at Barbagallo Raceway? Bloody right i would! |
