JacobP should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

The rule change will mandate more than the number of pit stops. It also specifies how long the car go (at most) on each type of tire. This seriously undermines teams's ability to optimize their tire strategy and do something creative. Everyone will be basically running on the same tire strategy. How great is that?

I still think people are making more of this than it'll turn out to be. Let's be clear they aren't mandating pitstop windows which really would be the death of F1.

It's 2 types of tyres that combined 1+1 won't last the race distance, hence a 2nd stop will be required. That really isn't that much different from the last two seasons.

It's the word mandatory that is getting underwear knotted.

If you haven't won any races, feel free to have a crack at getting through in one go
I've wondered whether I should advocate the CSCC system, whereby if you win a race you get a 30 second compulsory stop (in addition to your regular pit-stop time) for the rest of the season - two wins and its 1 minute, and so on...... I guess for F1 you might have to make it 5 or 10 secs rather than 30, but it would provide an interesting "levelling" tool

So basically that's handicapping the successful team. This is against the spirit of the rules of F1 of the last few decades IMO.

They pretty well are, you will go as far as possible on the soft tyres you start on, 50% on the harder tyre, and then the rest on the other soft!

Pit windows will be determined by how long you can make the final set of soft tyres last!

[QUOTE=Marbot;3338408]I did put a at the end of that sentence.

So did I Marb, I was not being facetious, rather having a pop at some who missed the point, certainly no offence intended, it all seemed rather obvious to me.

Kind regards,

Bob.

Not necessarily. (I could be arguing in my spare time!)
They could do 20% on the first soft, then 50% on the hards and the final 30% on the softs to finish the race (if that'll help on track position).
Or 25% + 50% + 25%, Or 45% (starting on hards), 25%, 30% and so on, there is still room for teams to optimise theur strategy depending on how well their cars conserve the rubber.

Teams are currently limited to eight (?) engines per car for the season, and as I understand it swap them as they see fit, so why not give the teams a set number of tyres at the start of the year, so many of each type, that they have to use up by the end of the season. Then they can play around with one stop strategies or any combination of stops to achieve maximum use of their allocation over all of the races.

This has several advantages chief amongst is the fresh subject that can be introduced into TV commentary. Just imagine the feverish speculation as Eddie, Dave, Martin et al try to explain the various configurations possible.

Are you listening Bernie?

My system would have 3 compounds of dry tyre: hard, medium and soft. There would be a performance margin between each and teams could race whichever tyre or combination of tyre they wanted. If the fastest way for a team was no stops on the hard tyre they could go that way whilst others may prefer more stops with softer compounds. Ideally there should be a theoretical equivalence in each case and how they set the cars up and drive them should make the difference.

Surely you would only want to spend 40% of the race on the hard tyre?

But the main thing is that it's most likely that the drivers will not be spending any of the race eking out tyre life (assuming that they can control the anticipated wheelspin)...they'll probably be eking out fuel instead.

The whole tyre/pitstop thing is micro management in a poor attempt to rescue the series from imploding. Open the regs up and this might encourage some real competition. I know, make four tyre stops and the pit crew is only allowed to be two people using wheel braces and no centre lock wheels. At least there would be some entertainment in the pits and the driver could have a rest break and chat with the engineer while he is waiting. The idea has about as much merit as any other that Bernie has created.

It would appear that the teams have rejected this plan: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/111806
