Mercedes to supply 2nd team in 2004?
Interesting article, any guesses of who the team might be?
From:www.pitpass.com Mercedes to supply second team? 15-01-2003 Ahead of today's crucial meeting between FIA President Max Mosley and team bosses, aimed at rejuvenating F1™ as well as cutting costs, it's said that Mercedes has taken the initiative by stating that it would be willing to supply a second team in 2004. According to a report in The Guardian the German manufacturer would be willing to supply a team, in addition to McLaren, with a fixed specification engine for around £6m - much less than some of the deals currently on offer from lesser manufacturers. It's widely thought that Mosley will concentrate on the banning of all drivers aids, a move that will sit well with fans and many drivers but is sure to meet strict opposition from the bigger, more successful, teams. At present it's planned that in 2004 teams will be limited to one engine per car at each Grand Prix, it's understood that Mosley is considering increasing this to two Grand Prix. However this could in turn lead to costs escalating as the engine manufacturers look at ways to circumvent these new regulations. As was seen in 2002 when the Honda was notoriously unreliable, this is bad PR for the engine manufacturers who are principally in F1™ to sell their road cars. Constant engine failure reflects badly on the manufacturer concerned therefore the engine builders will take whatever action necessary in order that their products are seen as reliable and successful, this could in turn lead to teams virtually re-building engines consistently during GP weekends. Then again, the manufacturers could decide to simply quit F1™. |

Well that would be a good start, but I fear it's too little to late. Hopefully the meeting late today brings about some good resolutions.

Yeah, well it sounds good, but Minardi-Ferrari and Prost-Ferrari have proved, a good engine doesnt gaurentee results.

I wouldnt pay $10 much less $6 million for the current engine. Merc better get their act together if they want to sell engines.

Would Sauber swap Ferarri for Mercedes? Based on current performance...why? Cosworth users could be interested from a cost perspective.
