Mallory commentary

I am not going to criticise the commentators at Monday's Easter Monday meeting - mainly because I couldn't hear them!

I was standing on the outside of Gerards where there are no PA speakers at all.

I went expecting lots of "watch the lights, watch the lights..." and to hear Ian Sowman's pearls of wisdom on SoM FF1600 but could just about hear a whisper from the nearest speaker....and once the cars came out it was impossible...

Is this a noise issue? Because as far as I could see after Gerards there is nothing but miles of rolling countryside.

Or is it simply that Mallory's powers-that-be decided there was no need for a PA system down there?

And what about at the Superbike meetings do they rig up something temporary or is it the same?

Love them or loathe them circuit commentators generally let you know what's happening and with the amount of red flags on Monday sometimes it was hard to guess what was going on. I only knew that the Ford Saloon race was being re-started because I heard one marshal shout it to the other across the track...

I know I could move nearer to a speaker but I had a good view from where I was standing...

I'm not sure why there are no speakers on the outside of Gerard's - maybe a historic thing as I seem to remember there wasn't necessarily space to watch from there in the past. It probably isn't the most popular place to watch but would be nice to have some speakers there.

I can tell you that the volume was turned up as far as possible in the box - but possibly not on the amplification unit (or whatever it is called). The other issue is that Andrew has a much louder voice than me so what is loud enough for him may not be when I am on!

I'll mention it to the circuit staff. Although I can tell you the FF1600 commentary was very good

yes I was a bit disappointed at the sound level. At one point I clearly heard the woman calling the cars to the assembly area over the comentary.

I find the tannoys awful at every circuit - half point the wrong way.

I see we have lost Toca Radio at the BTCC but have gained Embassy Radio at the GTs.

To be honest if you can't hear Andrew Wilkins it can be a bonus!

I've spoken to people about this in the past - Mallory doesn't appear to have enough speakers, whereas some circuits (eg Oulton) have so many you can't avoid the multiple echos echos echos
And then, where there is a decent number, as Les says they're either pointing in the wrong direction, or in the wrong place entirely! PA speakers appear to be a general problem, and not just something specific to Mallory

The problem with the multiple echos is not from too many speakers close together but the sound travelling from the speakers on the other side on the circuit. The added delay in the sound reaching you from these distant speakers causes the echo. Unfortunately there is no easy way to solve this and so its going to be something we have to put up with.

Noted Wens - but the biggest problem at Oulton is the commentary on the Ice Cream Van. Isn't it sprocket?

hmm, thats an idea for a new series.... Ice Cream Van Racing. run it like a sprint. quickest to get round the track, and serve every marshal with a free icecream is the winner
