Diesels!

Has anyone seen being used or used a diesel car for trackdays?

I'm trying to resist, but am having to face it that i need a diesl car for commuting but feel that it would be the end of my 'boy racer' days and feel obliged to buy the furry slippers! Is there other like minded people that take a diesel car out onto the track? Admitedly its unlikely to be anything sporty but i'm sure it'll still be fun

I did a few warm up laps at a track day in my Vectra 2.2 Turbo-diesel.
It was good. I drove it like a Formula Ford and all the Porches etc. could not keep up at all.

Don't VW make a diesel version of the GTi?

There are certainly some quick ones out there, noteably the VW group ones but sadly are just out of my price range. They just dont depreciate as much as others.

Have seen the Alfa 156 JTD for sale about 7 grand. 2.4L and 150bhp which seems to be the best i can afford at the moment.

I did about 50 laps of the 'ring in a diesel hire car. Opel Astra 1.7tdi.

It was grand going downhill.

I have seen some very fast diesels there, mostly BMW 330ds.

I have test driven the 330cd all this week and they're VERY good, but,still need a tad more.

Weeheee, this ismy 100th post, now I can play with the adults in Parc Ferme!

There is nothing wrong with running a diesel it's the future!
Just got back from this years Gumball 3000 Rally in a 330d BMW with a uprated ECU and a full system it's on an 04 plate so has the latest 208bhp engine.With mods running at 254bhp on the dyno with over 500Nm of torque.
Ferraris and Porsches from 70mph upwards are no problem.
0-60 under 6 sec's

Nice looking car! They are certainly known for being quick but didnt realise they had that much power and torque.

There a few quick ones available 330d, golf td gti are the more well known ones but sadly the price even second hand is a bit more than i'd planned.

Try a Skoda Fabia VRs 1.9 TDi 130bhp. Its based in the Polo chassis, but has Golf GTi performance, is lighter than the Golf.

Turbo kicks in at 1800rpm effective till 2800, six speed box and goes like the wind. You cant hear the engine so you really have to be careful when you wind it up on the roads.

Oh, and costs £12K new, half the price of a top end Golf.

How does a 130BHP Skoda compare with a 250BHP BMW?

Thanks for advice about the fabia, it certainly does look good. I currently have a Citroen Saxo VTR and i'm about 6"2 so its not particularly comfy on the long journeys but will try and find a skoda dealer locally as the performance is pretty appealling.

I use a tuning box on mine which has taken it up to 225bhp with even more torque than before. Its great although I am waiting until the waiting list is open on the new three series. The day it is I will be heading down to the garage to order the new 335d - 0-60 in around 6 seconds and more pull than a frieght train - yum

I know SEAT are doing a three versions of the desiel Ibiza, there is a 100bhp, 130bhp and now a 160bhp, all the size of a Polo, could be worth a look at.

How does the clutch on the BM handle the extra torque? i have a 150 diesel Golf, 'chipped'to give 180bhp and 375NM torque. The first clutch lasted 30K miles, the second about 15K. All on road, 'normal', use. Going in tomorrow to be fitted with another but using an Audi TT friction plate supposed to handle 300bhp.
