I think that it is an excellent idea to name the chicane after Edwina. After all, if she hadn't saved the circuit in 1983 it would more than likely have been lost to motorsport. We should all be grateful to her.

The Overend Family are the circuit owners/managers nowadays and Edwina Overend was largely responsible in the early 80's for keeping Mallory Park in business, as the administrators were knocking at the door. So like most parts of a track, "Edwina's" is, I guess, a "Thankyou" to Mrs Overend!

I thought that Mallory was actually owned by Chris Meek, property developer and sometime sportscar racer?

Maybe, but the Overends are still involved in some big way I think!

Couldn't agree more, the Overends are what makes Mallory work. They are hands-on people, which I suspect is what makes the venue so popular and pleasant to marshal at. Perhaps other circuit owners could learn a lesson or two!

At least I am assured of one thing, after the events at the first meeting a couple of years ago. It was my first, and only, fatality in front of me! To say that I was stunned by the reaction of both the people at the circuit on the day as well as all the other marshals that know me would be an understatement.
I'm only typing this because it still comes back to me as I fill in my availability for 750. I'm made aware of two things..... 1) Motorsport is Dangerous but..... 2) You never realise just how many friends you have until "IT" happens. I'm not being a profit of doom but........ for those of you who have never yet been in the situation, you'd be surprised just how many "friends" you really have. Just wearing Orange was enough for people to think they knew me and to call me!! I know it sounds morbid but it's incidents like that one that make you realise just how close the marshalling fraternity really is and just how much support can be received from "total strangers". OK, waffle over.......... here's to a great and safe 2003 which for me starts on the 9th !!! See you all there! |

Me too. Maybe we should practice a handshake or sumfin? All 10-10thers should go to sign-on with one overall leg tucked in the sock and the other one out.
