Tales from the Tarmac

For Christmas I received the DVD of 'Tales from the Tarmac' which goes back to the early Nineties through to 2002. It was interesting seeing the likes of Will Hoy, Andy Rouse, Gary Ayles and others battling it out. I was amused when Murray refered to a Matthew Neal. And wondered how Tim Harvey does not seem to have aged from how he looked in the nineties.

I have not seen all of it yet. Does anyone have any memorable races from the Nineties that come to mind?

All of them.

Snetterton 94 comes to mind straight away. While the rest of the racing world was about to be stunned by some other news, the BTCC boys were putting on a great show. The battle at the front was great untill Tarquini got by, and the O'dor, Cleland, Watts, O'Brien, Harvey etc, battle was great. And beware the Volvo!

If you're talking about memorable BTCC races in the 90's, there's one that HAS to go on the list- the final round at Silverstone in 1992- best remembered for the infamous Soper/Cleland incident.....

The thing with Tim Harvey that a lot of people forget (myself included) is that he got into Touring Cars when he was still fairly young. I always think of him in the same group as Cleland, Hoy and Rouse when actually they were all 10 years or so older than him.

Have to say Mansell 98 Donnington. Love him or loath him you gotta admit it was a stunning race.

Yeah, 98 was probably the best season of the super touring era.

I think you could describe the '95 season for Volvo more as frustrating than exciting? It just frustrated me so much to see Volvo having such a competitive and championship material car, yet they had these little windshield fogging gremlins kept them from the title. If it wasn't for the windshield problem, they would have won the '95 season, the inagural season of the 850 sedan!!!

That was made in 2001 - I didn't know they still did that. Is it still a 2 video boxset?

That was the race meeting that got me going to Donington (and motor racing) more and more, and at the end of the year deciding to start marshalling instead of paying to watch the racing all the time. Best decision I ever made.

Sorry, boring insight into my world, but it just reminded me

Donnington '98! that was a great race.

Silverstone '92 - Soper and Cleland!

Now that's what got me really into touring cars! Superb!

'the story of the btcc' video talked about earlier in this thread is a double video.

Its in WHSmiths january sale for £4.99 and is well worth it. It features quick reviews of every race from for 91 - 00.

Whats great about it is they've pulled the coverage they show from the TV broadcasts and as such you see action thats not on the normal review videos.

Few things a bit dodgy about it tho, Charlie Cox mistakingly calls Andy Rouse, Rouse Palmer! doh.
Theres no need for it to be on two videos as total running time is only 2hrs. And the packaging has pics of the 2001 season on it which is daft as the video stops at 2000.

Tales from the Tarmac....top quality DVD, got it last January...enjoyed it immensly..

Then Motors TV showed it a few weeks later under the name "BTCC Story"

Always happens to me!

Still, that doesn't take away from the Quality of the DVD...some great action I'd never seen!

If you're referring to Senna's death, then I thought this meeting was the day after - I'm sure the Alfas 'wore' Senna tributes on their bonnet corners and the crowd held a one minute's silence.

I'd say the most exciting BTCC race I saw in the Nineties was at Snetterton, but 1996 with so many different winners and spinners etc. James Thompson won in the recalcitrant new Vectra ... The race in which Tim Harvey achieved his first victory in the BMW in 1992, with sparks coming out from underneath due to a scraping exhaust system, was also pretty spectacular. But perhaps the greatest/most exciting/unpredictable has to be the '92 finale. I was lucky enough to have Soper/Cleland thump the barriers together just yards from where I was standing ...

I did see 'Tales from the Tarmac' for sale recently, but thought it looked so amateurish/cheap/nasty/tacky from the cover that I handed it back like it had lurgy.

covers for motorsport stuff in general arent ever really inspired, i mean whats the point of the striped red and white colour for the text - yuk.

Which is a shame because by all accounts its quite a good dvd.

Apparently there's a video too, although I've never seen it - £5.99, but not from Duke.
