Ford Germany to enter ETCC
A German team, with backing from Ford Germany, will enter a pair of Ford Focus's at the German round of the ETCC next time out at Oscherslaben, with a view of a full works assault in 2003 (German factory support)

But doesn't the prospect of Ford and Volvo racing on the same track clash with Ford Motor Company's racing strategy for all their brands?

So is the Focus going to be a sedan based one or a converted(??) hatchback that has been racing in the German DTCC series? Cool concept. It would be really cool to see a four door Focus sedan? I don't think there is one racing anywhere in the world as yet?

KMC-the Focus raced this year will be a ST-170 hatchback in Super 2000 trim.
If Ford Germany want to continue in 2003 it will have to be a four door. It will be interesting to see if FoMoCo allows Ford and Volvo to both race in next years ETCC. KM |

In a way if Ford were to enter it'd leave Volvo to be able to play with their toys elsewhere if they wanted, without having to suffer BMW.

The whole Ford racing Ethos is:-
F1: Jaguar WRC: Ford Touring: Volvo GT: Aston Martin A works supported team could be possible but a full works team is HIGHLY unlikely. |

What I meant is a German Ford works effort. The German Ford firm will supply the backing, BMW UK did in the early 1990's I believe. It could turn out to be a one off race.

Yep it is Ford Germany backing the effort, the funding won't be coming from Detroit, so therefore i guess they can run if they want.
I would suppose the cars will be SP won't they, or updated SP, not proper S2000 cars, as a car like the Focus will be ineligible next year. |

I guess that Ford Germany have autonomy and can do what they like. That said, if Detroit didn't like the idea of a Ford Germany Focus Team competing against the Volvo factory effort they could end it.
To have both competing in the ETCC would be beyond my expectations. If Opel,Seat,Honda and Nissan come then I am going to buy the N.American TV rights. KM |

That will be a sad day when Detroit will step in to block the national importer from paying the bills to have a car racing. I guess that the auto groups want each model to be "sporty" in their own way--whether it be "WRC sporty", "touring car sporty" or "F1 sporty"?

Well Jaguar would hardly be suited to WRC, as they don't have a suitable car, and I'm sure their products aimed slightly higher than Peugeot or Subaru. In F1 they have the chance to beat Ferrari, Mercedes, maybe BMW which is more up their street.
Volvo are in Touring Cars as they have been in one series or another for quite a while now and there they're competing against BMW and Alfa Romeo. Aston Martin is just GT's through and through. Traditionally that's where they've been, and besides they don't have a touring car! Ford really is the odd one out which I think could compete in anything as they really are normal cars and any sort of racing would do them good. |

To correct a couple of things here, it will be a single Focus, not a pair of cars, run by Team Hotfiel Sport. The car was originally built to partial Super-2000 regs for the Nurburgring 24hr. The biggest change will be Super-2000 spec aerodynamics which the car didn't have for the 24hrs. As previously said it's a 3-door ST170 model, and therefore doen't comply to the 4.2m minimum length so will not score points.
I get the feeling it's basically a private effort with a small amount of support from Ford Germany rather than a proper 'works' team. Thomas Klenke will drive at Oschersleben, Patrick Bernhardt will drive at Spa. No word on any future plans. And finally a quick dig around and I've found these pics of the car racing at Nurburgring. http://www1.ford.de/wf/ms/24h_rennen/bilder/03.html http://www1.ford.de/wf/ms/24h_rennen/bilder/19.html http://www1.ford.de/wf/ms/24h_rennen/bilder/22.html |

Hmmm, so what does this mean? So I wonder how serious are Ford Germany in having the Focus race in the ETCC? Testing the competitiveness of the series? Or perhaps, Ford Germany just had a few extra motorsport dollars and wanted to use it all up? OTOH, the Civic h/b is below the minimum length and they are allowed to score points? I guess the ETCC didn't want the Focus becoming a wild card and affecting the championship.

From what I gathered, the Civic and the Focus can score points in the drivers championship, but not in the manufacturers championship. But I could be wrong.

See, that's what sucks about manufacturers having a monopoly on many brands like both Ford and GM do: The racing suffers because manufacturers are not interested in entering many different brands into one series and then the numbers of entrants are depleted.
