Rumors from "inside the program" of a factory Viper ALMS entry in GT for 2012. Let's cross our fingers Cheers |

Cheers |

Yeah it does deserve it's own thread if it's legit. Just seen a Graham (DSC) tweet about the imminent announcement of a GTE programme. Could be this? If so, BRILLIANT.

It was about time.
As I said earlier, if this goes ahead it's probably the best possible thing that could happen to ALMS... screw prototypes, I've missed the epic Corvette-Viper battles. |

EDIT: Scratch that, sorry, Graham's tweet refers to another unannounced programme now that I read it, so it might be this. |

Unfortunately, the GTE program GG is talking about doesn't look to be the Viper. Hopefully more on that soon though... :-P

Take everything with a pinch of salt, until it arrives on the track... well except for major manufacturers, such as Lexus... oops...
Heck, there are issues with this story, and that is no criticism of Murphy, who just reported what he'd heard. An 8.0l V10 simply doesn't meet the current ACO rules. So will the rules be changed, or is IMSA going in it's own direction? I do hope this story has legs. |

I'd think it's still the monster V10, as that is what is going into the new Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale as well.

Graham's tweet was certainly not about the Lambda Ford GT / E. ;-)

Yeah, that definitely makes it a bit of a buzzkill after contemplating the initial rumor. Hopefully it will happen though. I think the old GTS Vipers brought a lot of excitement to the ALMS back in the day and a return of serious Corvette vs. Viper battles could attract some attention.
Any chance that someone like Penske could run the program if it is a factory deal? 2012 seems too soon, but maybe work has been going on behind the scenes. Wasn't there a rumor that the new Viper would have a V8 at least as an option? |

Earlier this year I've heard a lot of rumors about the next Viper being based on the 8C Competizione. That not necessarily mean it must have its Ferrari V8, but who knows... |

With the modern world of shared platforms could there be a dual programme with the next generation Viper in ALMS and a shared platform Alfa or perhaps Maserati in WEC - they are all under the same roof now after all!

Most car rags seem to believe that it is a revision of the existing V10.

Yeah, if you lop it in half. The current engine regs are rubbish. |

I remember seeing the first Viper attempt at Le Mans , the dayglo yellow and orange cars , then the 2 Canaska Southwind and Oreca GT1 examples (Vic Lee would have looked more at home with a hamburger clenched in his fist that a steering wheel) and every other that raced there , saw it at Sebring in 2003 . Very pleasing machine , and a sad Le Mans when the car was at last retired . Be brilliant to see it back again ..... everyone loved it .
That American Viper team (Tom Weikhart) must surly be the best Viper mechanics about for thousands of miles , they musta rebuilt that car 7001 times , it even went swimming if I remember correctly ..... Bet ol'Hugh de Chaunac loved them !!! Sincerly hope this is no rumour , but fact . I wonder who could be in the running to race it ? |

And eventually got rid of it altogether for the 2008 race and slotted in a V8 that was under the maximum capacity limit.
