June 26/27 1906
I'm surprised nobody (not even the bear) posted anything yesterday.
Today is the centenary of the victory of Ferenc Szisz driving a Renault in the first Grand Prix of the Automobile Club de France - the first ever Grand Prix |

Certainly well worthy of mention and a great reminder, thanks D-type.
According to David Hodges, 34 cars entered of which 32 started, proof that motor racing was already well and truly established. Over 12 incredibly long laps (the race covered 769 miles!) with Le Mans the start and finish, Szisz took 12 hours 14 mins. 7 secs and averaged 62.88 mph! Truly heroic stuff. Most of the leading drivers of the day took part - Nazzaro, Clement, Lancia, Duray, Jenatzy and Wagner among them. |
