What was everybody's first car

I'm not sure whether this has been done before, but what was everybody's first car? and not to exclude those who have never owned a car, me included, what would you like you first car to be.

I would like mine to be an old shape VW Beetle (i.e. not that crappy excuse for a car that is the new beetle is, The old Beetle is a classic, you can't recreate that with a "new" one)
By the way my brother does own a Beetle and it's really grown on me.

My first car bought 6 years ago this weekend was an A-reg Ford Fiesta, it was a fantastic car, only ever let me down once.

It only two faults a dodgy wing and the carboretor was gone. I had many happy hours with that car............

Austin Maestro Vanden Plas. Had it for 4 years now and love it to bits. Having had the car so long, I know exactly how it behaves and handles, and we have so much fun haring round together

I part exchanged it for a Dutton Melos.

Volkswagen 1600TL Fastback, 1971 model.

Now, as just about everyone looks blank when I try to describe it as a big Beetle-ish coupe with a VW camper engine, here is one.

Mine was white, and right hand drive, but otherwise....

Well, you get the picture.

With nothing but the spare tyre in the front, and a heavy, twin carburetted 1600 engine slung over the back wheels, the handling in rain, ice and snow was spectacular to say the least.

Taught me a lot, did that dear old car.

Riley Elf!! 1977.
Bought it for 60 quid with 12 months MOT, sold it for 20 minus the passenger seat as this had fallen through the rotten floor whilst negotiating a level crossing with my mate sitting on it! I wondered why the carpet got so wet in the passenger footwell everytime it rained and HOW it managed to pass the MOT test.
Got 14 of us in it once when at college plus another on the roof using his arms as windscreen wipers! Children, children...

C reg Citroen Visa! with the 'more powerful' 652CC engine (as opposed to the 600CC version from the 2CV!), quite simple, but easy to take the engine out, as it was so small and light, and it would still pull up to about 80MPH!! Air cooled, good little car, handled really well.

Only had about 7 in it at Uni...

Now, did you say anything about taking it off campus in that condition?

I mentioned in another thread in the Gravel Trap the night when one of our undergrads drove through Bangor with a girl sitting bravely on the bonnet of his Capri.

A rather bright yellow 1988 Vauxhall Nova Merit which I kept for 5 1/2 years, quite impressed that when I did finally sell it, it was sold for just £100 less I'd originally paid for it
The worst we ever did in that car was driving back from a christmas meal whilst at uni, 5 students and a blow up doll in the car. We didn't actually get stopped by the police, but his eyes nearly popped out of his head!

Andrew, your Elf can chase Chris's Mini through Devil's Elbow at Mallory - how does that sound?

By the way, Oversteer - before you lay money down for an old-shape Beetle, try driving one. I've driven more than thirty of the little beasties, from a 1950s split-screen 34 horsepower car to one of the last fuel-injected 1600 convertibles, and while they're certainly charismatic, they have some very nasty little vices, and they are not the world's most pleasurable driving experience.

Mine was a 1979 Mazda 626 coupe. It was kermit green with a set of gold mags. It was a pretty good car and boy did it oversteer it the wet, great fun.

TimD, one of my teachers at school had one of those VW's. He used to call it the poverty porsche

My first car was a 1982 model Toyota KE70 Corolla CS. It was six years old and in pretty good condition with 104 000km on the clock. It had nice comfy cloth seats, carpets and an FM radio, everything you could want, hauled around by a 1300cc pushrod motor with a tiny little single barrel carby.

i got my first car when i was 21, it was a 1989 Ford Escort XR3i. my other choices were Porsche 924, (old shape)Nissan 300 ZX and (old shape)Toyota Supra. I probably made the right choice but the others would have been fun.
