Now, as just about everyone looks blank when I try to describe it as a big Beetle-ish coupe with a VW camper engine, here is one.

Mine was white, and right hand drive, but otherwise....

Well, you get the picture.

With nothing but the spare tyre in the front, and a heavy, twin carburetted 1600 engine slung over the back wheels, the handling in rain, ice and snow was spectacular to say the least.

Taught me a lot, did that dear old car.
Tim, you're not the only one to have had a Volvo as a first car!!! My first arrived last week, a 1993 Volvo 440 Xi. People may laugh when I say I have a Volvo, but thier Fiestas and Novas don't have a 1.8L engine!!!

My first car

My first car was a little 1978 Mini clubman estate, color was mushy pea green and rust brown! Auto model, with a little less power than your average lawn mower. Only had it 2 weeks before I wrote in off in a head-on collision with a Vauxhall Cavalier...

A 1981 Lancia HPE 2000ie automatic in BRIGHT yellow
Beautiful car, good performance, **** electrics. Went the way of the dodo at a set of traffic lights due to a combination of a transit van in front, a well-curved young lady in a well-filled crop top and cycle shorts to the left and a misunderstanding over which pedal was the brake and which was the accelerator

Andy - look again. My poor old Volkswagen would be outraged at being accused of being Swedish.

I have had a Volvo, but it wasn't my first car. It was a 1983 240GLE, and it was my 17th car - or 18th - can't rightly remember.

Cool!

Have you read Garrison Keiler?
